All hope of the West Union ALCO store remaining open were dashed last week with news that all 198 ALCO stores across 23 states would be closing their doors and immediately starting a going-out-of-business sale.

The West Union staff received the news of the store’s pending closure Friday morning. A short time later, the “Store Closing” and “Going Out of Business” signs hung outside the local retailer, located at Lilac Plaza.

Celebrating Thanksgiving and the other upcoming holidays is accomplished in many different ways amongst family and friends each year.

For 18-year-old Tessa Becker, this holiday season will be about being thankful for all the happy memories of her mother, Jackie, who lost her battle with cancer in October 2013. The rural Elgin teenager admits being numb to her mother’s death last year since it was so close to the holidays.

“It was probably a good thing that it happened then. The holidays passed so quickly, and I had the entire summer for everything to sink in,” she admitted.

“The most important thing for me and my family now is to continue remembering and sharing all of those happy memories we have, rather than dwelling on her death,” Tessa continued, adding with a smile, “Fortunately, Mom was probably one of the goofiest ladies out there, and I have plenty of good memories to lean on now.”

The South Winneshiek Warriors traveled to Cedar Falls on Saturday morning to take on the Iowa City Regina Regals in a state semifinal matchup in the UNI-Dome.

The Warriors were not able to keep up with the four-time defending state champions, falling by a score of 56-18 and ending the Warriors’ record-breaking season.

“We needed to have a near-perfect performance to have a chance to win against Regina,” noted head coach Jason Ohrt. “In the end, things just didn’t go our way as we made a few too many mistakes.”
