Friends Valerie Buehler and Elissa Wenthe shared a desire to see the Fayette Open-Air Market area lit up with Christmas lights and decorations this season.

A couple of months ago, they approached the Fayette City Council with their idea. The first step was for the City to install electricity at the shelter house, which it agreed to do. In the meantime, the two young mothers, who also work full-time, got to work arranging for enough funding to purchase lights.

The Nativity scene has for many years been part of the downtown Christmas decor, but the two felt it would be more appropriate on a large lawn of its own, rather than become nearly buried under piles of snow as the downtown was cleared of the white stuff each time snow fell.

With donations from the Fayette Rec Board, Fayette Community Church, and their own pockets, the two women achieved their goal for 2014.
