Council to host budget hearing Monday

Council to host budget hearing Monday

The West Union City Council will host a public hearing Monday in regard to the proposed 2015-2016 fiscal year budget. The proposal includes an approximate 28-cent property tax levy increase.

If approved, the increase would raise the local city property tax levy to approximately $15.04 per $1,000 of taxable valuation. The estimated tax rate on ag land would remain at $3.

A minimal increase in property tax levy revenues is projected to be collected under the proposed budget (from $1.06 million to $1.08 million) for the next fiscal year.

City Administrator Teresa Ruroden acknowledged last week that the lone department to see a significant cut to its budget compared to last year was the council’s decision to eliminate approximately $16,500 from the library budget.

The South Winn boys made a valiant effort, but came up just short in the Class 2A District 6 playoff game Monday, Feb. 16, in New Hampton.

The Warriors lost a heartbreaker to North Fayette Valley, 67-61, to end the season at 7-15.

The District opener was close all the way. Playing as the visiting team, SW’s desperation bomb from midcourt went wide and the Warriors trailed, 12-9, at the end of the first eight minutes.

Carson Lensing took over for SW in the second quarter, scoring nine of his game-high 17 points. However, the Warriors still trailed, 34-26 going into the halftime break.

They now advance to the second round of the Class 2A Region 4 playoffs against Starmony on Tuesday, Feb. 17.

The Warriors relied on a huge defensive effort, forcing a total of 22 turnovers and not allowing the Cyclones to score more than six points in a quarter.

South Winn scored a season-high 57 points to go along with its stellar defense.

South Winneshiek wrestlers competed at the Class 1A District 3 Tournament in Jesup on Saturday. In a highly competitive tournament, four Warriors walked away with top-2 finishes, meaning they can pack their bags for the State Wrestling Tournament this week in Des Moines.

Senior Cody Fisher got his team fired up with a 15-2 major decision over Maquoketa Valley’s Greg Guetzko. Fisher lost by fall to North Linn’s No. 2-ranked Brock Henderson in the finals, but was still able to punch his ticket to Des Moines.

At 138 pounds, senior Luis Uribe trailed East Buchanan’s Braydon Nunemaker going into the final period. Uribe used a quick takedown and back points to take the lead and pull away for the opening-round victory. Uribe lost by an 18-0 technical fall in the first-place match to Alburnett’s Tanner Sloan. Despite the loss, Uribe became the second Warrior to earn a trip to State on the day.

Ryan Hageman fought off Alburnett’s Austin Hoyle to earn a 3-1 decision in the 170 pound opening-round match before making quick work of North Linn’s Dakota Lopata in the championship match, thanks to a fall at the 1:00 mark of the first period. The win made Hageman the District champion and sent him to the State Wrestling Tournament for the second consecutive year.

At 182 pounds, junior Landers Kuboushek kicked his day off with a third-period fall over Jesup’s No. 9-ranked Riley Murray. Kuboushek was unable to keep the momentum going, however, as he dropped a close 7-6 decision to Maquoketa Valley’s Steve Huber. Despite the loss, Kuboushek made it four state qualifiers for the Warriors.
