One of Governor Terry Branstad’s yearly goals is to visit all 99 Iowa counties. On Thursday, April 16, the longest-serving governor in Iowa history made stops across northeast Iowa to cross several counties off of his list.

“By pledging to visit every county in the state, I get to see the many different wonderful industries that we have right here in Iowa,” noted Branstad while addressing a crowd in Postville. “It gives me the opportunity to see what I can do to grow and help progress these industries in small-town Iowa.”

Branstad’s trip to Postville saw him visiting one of the oldest businesses in all of Iowa, Hall Roberts’ Son, Inc.

The wholesale feed and seed producer has been family-owned since it first opened in 1864, prior to the conclusion of the Civil War.

Nearly everyone in the area is familiar with Art Huber. If they haven’t had the privilege of meeting him personally, surely they have heard of Huber’s Store, which has been a family-owned grocery store in Fort Atkinson since 1876.

The second-generation family owner of the store with his brother, Virgil, spent several years working at General Motors in Cincinnati during World War II. He joined the war effort as the plant he worked for build trucks.

As it readies to implement a housing inspection program, the Fayette City Council Monday night reviewed the letter that will be sent to owners of properties deemed by the county assessor as being in "very poor" or "poor" condition.

Among the items on the checklist as specified in the ordinance, is that the dwelling must be free of garbage, debris and refuse; access to windows and outlets is required. The kitchen needs a refrigerator of sufficient size, and a stove or microwave is necessary. All doors and windows accessible from the outside must be equipped with locks including public common areas. Windows must stay open without being propped, and be free of breaks or cracks in the glass.  If there is a small crack, clear caulk or tape is acceptable. A privacy lock is required on the bathroom door. Each room used for living and/or sleeping must have one window that opens to the outside.
