The North Fayette Valley girls won the UIC Golf Tournament Monday, May 11, in Luana.

The girls had to battle not only the other golfers but also the unseasonably cold temperatures and biting winds that swept over the course.

The girls won by four strokes and crowned five of the six golfers with All-Conference honors.

NFV girls 3rd in UIC by a point

Becca Miller (left) moves to the side of the track after finishing her leg of the 4x800. Meanwhile, Natalie Moyle has a determined look as she runs the anchor leg. On the backstretch during her final lap, a wall of water with hail hit the area, and the race was halted with the TigerHawks winning. Moyle didn’t hear the cancellation and ran through the gale-like winds, rain and hail to within 100 meters of the finish line before someone could tell her to stop running and seek cover. Just one point separated NFV and South for second place in the UIC Thursday in West Union.

Clayton Ridge, behind the incomparable Jasmine Staebler, won with 137 points.

Meanwhile the TigerHawks were in a close battle with the Warriors.

The meet was delayed twice because of a series of storms bringing high wind and heavy rain. The first delay came as rain and hail poured onto the track during the girls’ 4x800. The race was called with NFV ahead as blinding sheets of rain that completely obscured portions of the track.

NFV was declared the winner with SW second, but   no time could be recorded. TigerHawk anchor Natalie Moyle actually tried to finish the race in the rain and sleet that left one girl bleeding from the forehead from the hail; another person had bruises on the back of their legs. Meanwhile someone was able to stop Moyle about 100 meters from the finish line.

In other events, NFV went one-two in the discus with Emily Creery and Callie Mueller winning gold and silver, respectively. The 4x800 was the other gold-medal winner for the TigerHawks.

Kim Rounds was runner-up in the 100 hurdles and Natalie Fettkether was third in the 400 hurdles.

With a strong wind blowing into the faces of runners coming down the homestretch, not many record times were achieved. However, Allison Schori set a personal-best in the 200 and the 4x100 also set a season-best.

Head coach Mark Nuss called the meet, “A great team effort! Doubling up in events kept us in the running.

“This girls’ team has worked very hard this season, and the coaching staff is pleased with their effort and continued improvement. We just need a little more improvement next week in Osage at the State Qualifying Meet.”

Head coach Mark Nuss commented, “It was a positive meet for us with quite a few season- and person-bests. We held some girls back to keep them fresh for the UIC Meet, yet still finished a strong second.”

The medal haul included nine gold and four bronze.

Boys win UIU track

Danny Halva is all alone in first during the 3200 at the UIC Track Meet Thursday in West Union. In the background, officials Jim Bossom (left) and Pat Lincoln look at the sky with some concern as a storm front moves in. The second photo was taken two laps later as Halva runs through the heavy rain on his way to the victory. However, officials cleared the field and stands during the race, then halted the meet for the second time that night due to weather. The meet was eventually completed with the TigerHawk boys winning. Boys win UIC track

North Fayette Valley won a pair of boys’ track meets last week, with the big win coming at home as the TigerHawks beat SW by 47 points for the UIC title. Monday, NFV topped a field of nine teams in Monona.

Once again the UIC was delayed by the weather. Last year in Monona, heavy rain and lightning delayed the meet for almost 40 minutes.

Thursday in West Union, the race was delayed twice. The first time a wall of water, with hail, hit with a fury during the girls’ 4x800 and then more heavy rain, forcing one delay; another brief storm with heavy rain during the boys’ 3200 caused a second delay.

As fans were waiting for events to resume with the shuttle hurdle, lightning forced people into the gym for a while longer.

Eventually the front passed by and the meet was able to finish. However, times may have been a little slower than normal due to a strong wind from the south that blew right into the faces of runners coming down the home stretch to the finish line.

The North Fayette Board of Education on Monday night approved a proposal to establish a Downtown Academy to serve six or more of the district’s special education students. The students now attend classes off-campus in communities at some distance.

The Downtown Academy behavioral disability class will allow for individualized education plans (IEPs) coupled with integration of the students with their peers in North Fayette Valley 7-12 classrooms.

NF has had up to eight students attending classes outside of West Union centers at times over the past few years, Supt. Duane Willhite told the board. Students have been traveling to Bremwood in Waverly or Crossroads Academy in Decorah every day, five days a week.

Experiencing Africa

As the sun sets, a lone giraffe makes its way across the African plain near an acacia tree. Ron and Julie Schute of West Union will remember this scene from their trip to Africa for many years to come.

Experiencing Africa

The wide stretching limbs of an acacia tree form a canopy of limbs and leaves, providing a small haven of shade against the hot afternoon sun. Later, as the sun sinks to the horizon, a giraffe saunters by the tree, silhouetted against the sky on a vast plain. It is the classic African scene, and one that many of us have viewed on television or in movie theaters. For one West Union couple, however, those experiences were real, and thus have so much more meaning to them now than they ever had before.

“While we were on safari, I saw a giraffe walking near an acacia tree as the sun was setting and I thought to myself, ‘This is what everyone thinks of when they think about Africa, and I am seeing it in person right now,’”said Julie Schute, who traveled with her daughter Kara’s family to visit her son-in-law’s parents in December.

It was Sam and Agnes Kebu, parents of their daughter’s husband, Boniface, who first suggested the idea of Ron and Julie Schute taking a trip to Mlolongo, Kenya.
