Hawkeye Fun Days to be 'Super'

 “Fun With Superheroes” is the theme for this year’s Hawkeye Fun Days, set for Friday, June 19, and Saturday, June 20. A variety of activities, food, and entertainment will be available, with something for every age group.

Hawkeye Fun Days activities start Friday evening with a softball tournament beginning at 6 p.m. and a 5K walk/run at 6:30 p.m. The crowning of Miss Hawkeye is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Hauth Park. Candidates for this year’s crown include Jessica Boess, Brea Hanson, and Tiffanie Koch.

After the coronation of Miss Hawkeye, Oliver Westpfahl will be introduced as this year’s grand marshal for the Hawkeye Fun Days parade, which will take place on Saturday morning. There will also be fireworks at dusk on Friday evening.

The parade will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, to be followed by a variety of activities in the afternoon, including a science fun zone, a superhero hunt, ring toss, bounce house, face painting, and a super water shoot.

Alice Mona Whitver, 83, of West Union passed away Thursday, June 11, 2015, at Palmer Lutheran Health Center in West Union.

A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 15, at West Union United Methodist Church with the Rev. Chris Ebbers officiating.

Mona was born to Jens Christian and Alice Mona (Cottier) Jensen on April 8, 1932, in West Union.

She grew up on a farm and attended Windsor No. 1 country school through eighth grade. She later graduated from West Union High School with the class of 1950.

Following high school, Mona attended Upper Iowa University, where she met and married Loren “Buck” Whitver. To this union were born three children, Marcia, Mark and Chris.

During their 63-year marriage, Buck and Mona lived in several towns throughout Iowa, including Jefferson, Postville, Colfax, and Bloomfield, before moving to Mona’s hometown of West Union.

Everett Meier

Everett Meier

 

 

Everett H. Meier, age 80, Longmont Colorado, passed away peacefully on Thursday June 4, 2015 in Louisville, Colorado.  

A memorial celebration of Everett’s life was held on Sunday June 7, 2015 in Highlands Ranch, Colorado with Rev. Ryan Canaday officiating.  Music solo was provided by Jeanette Aurand. 

A local memorial service will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Sumner, Iowa on Saturday September 5, 2015 at 10:00 AM.

Memorials may be directed to the American Heart Association, American Diabetes Association or St. John’s Lutheran Church, Sumner, Iowa.

Everett Henry Meier was born on September 2, 1934 in Frederika, Iowa to Mary and Henry Meier.  He was the youngest of seven children; his parents and his three brothers and three sisters predeceased him.

Everett graduated from Upper Iowa University on May 27, 1957.

NFV softball cleared a major hurdle Monday (June 8) when it swept Clayton Ridge, 12-0 and 13-1, in West Union.

Before the games TigerHawk head coach Bob Lape said, “If we want to have any chance of contending for the UIC title, we have to get by Clayton Ridge.”

The man with 549 career victories also commented, “It’s always hard to beat a team two games in a row.

However, the TigerHawks accomplished that with a pair of resounding victories.

Swim Team opens with Decorah and rain

 

 

The West Union Swim Team opened the season by meeting powerhouse Decorah Tuesday, June 9, in West Union, then getting rained out Thursday against Elkader/Strawberry Point; no makeup date for the meet had been set by press time.

Decorah with its 100+ swimmers was too deep for West Union, claiming a 532-200 victory.

W.U. coach Meredith Murray commented, “Our kids swam well and showed much improvement from last year.”

Jekyll-Hyde week for NFV BB

It was very much a Jekyll-Hyde week for NFV baseball as it went 2-3. When the TigerHawks were good, they were very good, but errors made some of the scores look very lopsided.

Head coach Dan Hovden assessed the week, saying, “Too many errors and the mental ones were as big as the physical ones.”

The errors led to 22 unearned runs in five games.

Unionland Feed to compete in Regional

            Unionland Feed, the winner of West Union’s Open 4 Business competition held in early June, will be moving on to a regional competition to be held in Waverly on Tuesday, June 23. Open 4 Business is a competition designed to help provide financial and technical support for businesses that have improved Iowa’s Main Street districts.

Streetscape wins Iowa ASLA award

 

 

Demonstrating an environmentally conscious approach to community redevelopment, the completed “green” streetscape design in West Union has been recently recognized with an award from the American Society of Landscape Architects Iowa Chapter.

Each year, the professional association honors the best in landscape architecture from across the state. The West Union Green Streets Pilot Project by Conservation Design Forum was one of six projects in Iowa to be recognized in the competition.
