SW trumps New Hampton, on to Substate

Aware that any game could be his last in a Warrior uniform, South Winn’s Jordan Rommes delivered again from the mound. The senior, who will have earned 17 varsity sports letters at SW, tossed seven innings in Saturday’s District matchup with New Hampton. Rommes’ one-hit performance helped advance the Warriors to Substate, winning 4-1. (Zakary Kriener photo)

In a battle of a pair of Class 2A top-10 ranked teams, the Warriors edged the New Hampton Chickasaws, 4-1, to advance to Substate for the second consecutive season.

“This is what high school sports are all about,” said coach Alex Smith after the game. “There was a tremendous environment provided by fans from both communities.”

In the end, it was the Warriors who prevailed over the Chickasaws for the second time this season.

It’s no secret to most that Spillville possesses some of the richest history of any community in northeast Iowa. One of the most storied buildings in the town’s history is that which is home to Hotel Capone, a hotel, restaurant, and bar new to the community.

The building may look familiar to many locals and travelers alike, as it was the longtime home of The Old World Inn and most recently The Speakeasy. In 2013, the restaurant and bar closed its doors and left the community.

Enter Cameron Jones, Garrett Minear, and Paul Greenberg. Jones grew up in nearby Waukon, while Minear and Jones were raised in Decorah. The three young entrepreneurs, all 21 years of age or younger, purchased the nearly 145-year-old building just a few short months ago with a vision of owning their own hotel, restaurant, and bar.
