Discovering history in Elgin

Gerald E. Boleyn, great-uncle of John Boleyn, was the co-pilot for a B-29 Superfortress bomber during WW II. Gerald (second from the left in the back row) was initially listed as missing in action (MIA), then later as killed in action (KIA). John Boleyn discovered some information about his distant relative at the Elgin Historical Museum.

Discovering history in Elgin

Submitted by John Boleyn

In the summer of 2014, my family and I were back home in Elgin for the annual Homecoming celebration.  As we were enjoying the games and festivities in the park and downtown area, we decided to venture into the Historical Museum to check out the exhibits and read the accounts of the history of Elgin and the surrounding area.
One of the areas of the museum that drew my attention was dedicated to Elgin area residents who had served in the military and had given the ultimate sacrifice while on active duty. As I was looking for information on another relative in the exhibit, I discovered a distant relative that I had never heard anything about.  A series of logbooks, news articles, and a uniform were on display for Gerald E. Boleyn.  A brief interrogation of my parents ensued, and they remembered that he was the half-brother of my grandpa, Leo Boleyn.

Cookie jar becomes cache of sweet memories

There are still a few cookie jars for sale by the Hawkeye Historical Club. The jars depict the original gazebo in Hawkeye City Park as well as the newer, refurbished structure in 2007.

Cookie jar becomes cache of sweet memories

Even in death, one man’s heart remains in the small community where he was born, after his family decided to place his cremains in a cookie jar emblazoned with an image of the Hawkeye bandstand.

James Barton Dietel, 86, died July 2, 2015, in Minneapolis. Born in Hawkeye on a January day in 1929, he was a lifelong church organist, served his country in the U.S. Army, and attended Union College and the University of Minnesota, earning a degree in engineering. He was the son of Carl and Nellie Dietel, longtime Hawkeye residents.

Both Jim's father and grandfather were carpenters, but it was the elder Dietel who built the original gazebo in the Hawkeye City Park. The gazebo has long been a Hawkeye icon, and for that reason, advocates for preserving the town's history commissioned cookie jars with an image of the original gazebo on one side and the new, refurbished structure on the opposite side. Various crockery pieces were sold by the Hawkeye Historical Club to benefit ongoing efforts of the Hurd Museum.

Fayette council debates term length

Fayette council debates term length

Should the City of Fayette stagger council terms? That was the question debated by the Fayette City Council Monday night after a councilmember raised the question of whether or not to continue electing persons to all five council seats in the same year and for the same length of term (two years.)

The council learned that to make a change, a petition requesting a special election would be necessary to initiate change. The petition would require at least 26 signatures (10 percent of the voters in the last election.) If accepted by the council, the measure would appear on the general election ballot on Nov. 3.
