Some new and old faces join NFSB

Some new and old faces join NFSB

With school elections now over, one old, one new and two incumbents were elected to the North Fayette school board on Tuesday, Sept. 8.

Write-in candidate John Michael of Hawkeye is the newest addition to the North Fayette school board, beating out write-ins in District 1 by 85 votes (102-17). With a couple kids attending the local school district, Michael is excited about helping to shape the future.

“I thought it would be a good opportunity and a good way to give back to the community,” he said. “I would sure like to see them see through the merger with the Valley school and work out any budget issues and problems they may have.”

Carolyn Roys rejoins the North Fayette school board after a small hiatus. She originally lived in District 7 and was re-elected two years ago, but moved out of her district that January after being elected, which forced her to vacate the seat.

North Fayette establishes new photography policy

Emily Koch of West Union reads a prepared statement to the North Fayette school board about the initial policy on photographers at its Sept. 14 meeting. She and the board eventually reached a compromise in which Koch will be able to photograph school activities, but only in designated areas. She will have to register with the school every season and sign a waiver.

At its regular monthly meeting on Monday, Sept. 14, the North Fayette school board spent over an hour getting public input and discussing a new photography policy.

The initial policy was going to limit field access to just credentialed media personnel. However, a second proposal now allows for noncredentialed personnel to take photographs in designated areas on the field, but a person is required to call ahead for permission by noon on the day of the event.

Local photographer Emily Koch was at the meeting to protest the new policy and felt the new policy was unfairly pointed at her. She read a prepared statement to the board.

During a closed session at the Fayette County Fair Board’s monthly meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 8, Jim Granger was voted off the board for misconduct.

The Fair Board did not release any further details on the matter.

However, Granger himself told those in attendance after he had been voted off that it was related to a $30 check to pay for a meal at Gus and Tony’s Town House Cafe for Dale Merriam, owner of Merriam’s Midway Show, which provided the carnival rides for the fair.

The South Winneshiek football players took to the Upper Iowa University football field turf Friday night with only one thing on their mind – winning.

Thanks to a boost from several key leaders, they were able to do just that, picking up the 36-14 win over Wapsie Valley in the final tune-up game before district play.
