Conquering Chiari: #TeamJon

Six-year-old Jonathan Oakland and his mom, Niki Oakland, show off their “I Support Chiari Awareness” t-shirts. Jonathan was born with Chiari malformation type 1, which means that a portion of his skull is too small, causing his cerebellum to extend into the opening for his spinal cord; the resulting pressure affects the brain stem and spinal cord. Jonathan also has tethered spinal cord syndrome, syringomyelia, and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, all of which are extremely rare conditions. (Zakary Kriener photo)

For a 6-year-old, life should be about playing with tractors and Legos, not doctors appointments and surgeries like North Fayette Valley kindergarten student Jonathan Oakland has experienced throughout his young life.

Oakland, the son of Kevin and Niki Oakland of Elgin, suffers from several serious and rare conditions. The most prevalent of Jonathan’s illnesses is Chiari malformation type 1, which Jonathan was born with, and is a condition where a portion of the skull is too small and causes the cerebellum to extend into the foramen magnum (opening for the spinal cord), thus putting pressure on the brain stem and spinal cord. Chiari malformation is considered a rare and life-threatening neurological condition, found in approximately one of every 1,000 people.

It’s a way no team wishes to end its season.

Outmatched, the West Central Blue Devils (3-7) fell at Central Elkader (9-0) on Friday, Oct. 23, 66-13.

Without any playoff implications, this football game was more a point of pride, especially for the 11 healthy seniors who donned the Blue Devils uniform for a final time.

Clarksville contains Blue Devils attack

The Class 1A Region 6 first-round bout between the West Central Blue Devils and the Clarksville Indians on Tuesday, Oct. 20, wasn’t going to be a match-up for fireworks.

Neither team had much success this year as both came into the contest with four wins and from the start, it was evident that this was going to be an evenly contested match. In the end, it was the Indians who marched away from Maynard victorious, having beat the Blue Devils, 3-1.
