TigerHawk girls on 2-game win streak

Claire Hanson goes up strong against a pair of South Winn players Friday in West Union as she makes an old-fashioned three-point play – the basket and a free throw. Hanson was in double digits in rebounds for both NFV victories last week. (Jerry Wadian photo)

Hilary delivers the best gift of all for her sister

Last Wednesday and Thursday were full of tears of joy and happiness for sisters Alissa Dehl and Hilary Nuss after Hudson Bruce Dehl made a grand entrance around 3 a.m. on Dec. 16. Hilary was a gestational surrogate for her older sister, Alissa. The girls grew up in West Union the daughters of Rodney and Kathy Senner, who are proud of their girls beyond works. As a child, Alissa Senner saw her little sister as the little tagalong.

“There were many times she would sleep in my bed, even though she had a perfectly good bed in a bedroom of her own,” laughed Alissa, now married and living in Omaha.

Gas prices hit six-year low

Mike Johnson Jr. fills up his truck at All Stop in West Union as he prepares for a 12-hour drive to the lower portion of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. With gas prices at a six-year low, Johnson could be looking at saving quite a bit of money this holiday season by driving, rather than flying, to Michigan.

Gas prices are at a six-year low, which has many northeast Iowa families rethinking their travel plans for this holiday season.

The last time gas prices stayed consistently below $2 a gallon was in 2009. Locally the prices are currently $1.92/gallon at Casey’s General Store, $1.92/gallon at All Stop and $1.92/gallon at BP Express, as of Monday morning (Dec. 21).

Warrior boys stay at .500

Senior Mitch Herold has been on a mission so far this season. He and fellow senior Logan Schweinefus had nearly identical stat lines early last week, both scoring 18 points and grabbing five rebounds against MFL/MarMac. Herold and Schweinefus posted the same scoring and rebound totals as South Winn went on to pick up a 57-54 win over preseason favorite Clayton Ridge Friday. (Zakary Kriener photo)
