Last September, construction began on a brand-new Beef Science Technology Building at Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) in Calmar. Today, the 13,750-square-foot, $1.2 million facility in complete.

The new state-of-the-art building was erected to meet the needs of the growing beef industry in Iowa, as well as the fast-growing Beef Science program at NICC.

After brief discussion, the board decided to unanimously approve a decision to allow Strahm Hardware to park equipment in the alley behind the building.

Clermont Council seeks members for committee

The Clermont City Council is looking to form a committee for the Iowa DNR Source Water Protection Plan study after its regular meeting on Monday, April 18.

Ross Evelsizer, Northeast Iowa Resource Conservation and Development of Postville, was back once again to answer any questions about the program that would help the City develop a plan to protect its water supply. He noted that the committee should have three to seven people who are knowledgeable about the town of Clermont, such as citizens who have been active participants in the community for many years.

 Brady Forsyth was on top of his game Thursday, April 14, at Big Rock Country Club when he shot West Central’s lowest score with a 41 in a, 177-190, loss to Starmont.

The West Central boys’ and girls’ golf teams got their first wins of the season at Turkey Valley on Monday, April 11.

The girls’ team defeated the Trojans at Jackson Junction Golf Course, 256-279.

It was a busy week for the West Central boys’ and girls’ track teams as they hosted a meet and attended two others.

On Monday, April 11, West Central hosted the Blue Devils Relays at Oelwein with Clayton Ridge, Dunkerton, Edgewood-Colesburg, Kee High, Oelwein, Postville, Tripoli and Turkey Valley also competing.

On the girls’ side, the Blue Devils finished in eighth place with 28 team points while the boys finished seventh with 43 team points.

Forrest Claxton

 

 

Forrest B. Claxton, Jr., Springfield, Missouri, passed away on March 5, 2016, after a five

year decline in health. He was born March 30, 1923 in Fayette, Iowa, the son of Forrest B. and

Ruth (Dubbert) Claxton.

Forrest spent his childhood in Fayette. His parents were cultured, community leaders who raised him to be dependable and hard working. He was valedictorian of his high school class and attended Upper Iowa University before entering WWII in February, 1943. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps, took military and flight training in Wisconsin, California, Arizona and Texas, was commissioned as an officer, became a P-47 pilot and flew numerous missions over Germany with the 406th Fighter Group, 512th Squadron, before being shot down and captured by the Germans. He received the Purple Heart, Air Medal and Prisoner of War Medal.

The Fayette City Council appointed one new member each to its Fire Department and Ambulance Service at its meeting on Monday evening, April 18. Chris Varzavand was appointed to serve on the Fire Department while Tony Reinking was appointed to be a member of the Ambulance Service. Sean Schneider, who was also on the agenda to be appointed to the Fayette Ambulance Service, declined the appointment due to time constraints.

UIU library staff set to check out retirement

UIU library staff set to check out retirement

 

 

After combining for nearly 125 years of service to Upper Iowa University, staff members Carol Orr, Becky Wadian and Mary White will soon be checking out of Henderson-Wilder Library to enjoy the life of retirement.

The trio of loyal UIU employees have worked side by side in the Fayette campus library for over three decades. Currently serving as associate director of library services, Orr was hired by the university in 1970. Wadian joined the staff four years later, and the dedicated team of librarians was completed with White’s employment in 1981.

Richard Trewin

 

 

Richard “Dick” Thomas Trewin, 75, of Waucoma, died April 14, 2016 at Mercy Hospital in Mason City after a brief illness.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 18, 2016, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Waucoma, with Rev. Nick March celebrating the Mass.

Interment with honors conducted by the Waucoma American Legion Post was in the Alpha Cemetery.

Friends greeted the family 2:00 - 6:00 p.m. Sunday, April 17, 2016, at St. Mary's Church in Waucoma. Visitation continued an hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.

Funeral arrangements were with Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home in Waucoma.

Richard Trewin was born to Ronald and Frances (Burke) Trewin on Jan. 16, 1941 on a farm outside of Waucoma.
