The Ossian City Council met Monday evening, leading off with discussion about the Jessie Street project and the easements required for the projects.

A representative from iiw, the engineering firm behind the plans, was present to ask for additional funds in order to bring the project up-to-date with Iowa Department of Transportation code, as it was initially designed in 1999.

The council unanimously approved the necessary cost change, which led to discussion about easement fees for property owners that live on the route of the construction. The easements are necessary to provide project workers with enough room to work.

Clermont council continues nuisance discussion

Clermont council continues nuisance discussion

Clermont City Attorney David Hanson of Hofmeyer and Hanson was at the regular Monday meeting of Clermont City Council to discuss nuisances and what actions the council could take.

Hanson spent approximately half-hour going over what the City could do with nuisance properties and animal complaints, including those complaints made of a barking dog. He specified what would hold up in court and what could be deemed a weak case, telling the council it needs physical proof and first-hand witness accounts for such complaints against a dog. Just saying one’s neighbor’s dog barks too much wouldn’t hold up in court.

“If the weather is good, we are expecting 1,500 riders in Elgin, with the majority of those arriving around noon and departing at approximately 2 p.m. You always have some stragglers, but the biggest mob of them will be during those hours,” explained Polfer.

When the Fayette City Council met Monday night, June 6, it learned that Councilmember Todd Sorensen’s last meeting will be June 20, as he is moving outside the city.

After thanking Sorensen for his service, Mayor Andrew Wenthe commented, “Similar to last time, what I’d like to do is have councilmembers identify who is interested in being considered. Then we can decide if a special election is necessary if there is more than one candidate interested.”

The council agreed to a deadline of July 1 for councilmembers to let the mayor know the names of potential candidates.

The council heard a recommendation from Police Chief Rich Pisanti to hire Ben Davis, 28, as the city’s police officer. Davis, a North Fayette High School graduate, has experience as an MP while serving in the U.S. Army and is currently a police officer in Strawberry Point.
