Cathy Scheidel is a fighter. Even when meeting her for the very first time, that much is quite evident. She has vowed to continue that spirit and “fight, fight, fight” a second bout of cancer that has afflicted her.

She was originally diagnosed on March 22 with kidney cancer. The Elgin woman had gone to see her nurse practitioner, Susan McMillan, at Crossing Rivers Health in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, complaining about back pain. At first, McMillian wasn’t too concerned about the pain; however, when it was persistent, she finally ordered it to be tested.

There is a saying, “Christmas cookies and happy hearts, this is how the holiday starts,” and one local church has spent a quarter of a century kicking off the holiday season with just that – cookies and happy hearts.

It is a holiday tradition for many area sweets lovers to don a plastic glove on one hand, while carrying a soon-to-be-full box in the other as they peruse the seemingly endless variety of freshly baked yummies donated by area bakers during Zion Lutheran Church’s annual Cookie Walk.  And this year will be especially sweet, as the West Union event will be celebrating its 25th year of providing freshly baked goodies by the pound.
