A student perspective on reorganization

A student perspective on reorganization

It’s the students who will be most affected by the potential consolidation of the North Fayette and Valley school districts.

As voters head to the polls on Feb. 7, it will be important for voters to not only keep in mind how the merger will affect their own lives, but the lives of the students who will attend those schools.

In a recent interview, Duane Willhite, North Fayette and Valley shared superintendent, noted that he has heard nothing but positive feedback from the students on officially becoming the North Fayette Valley school district. The Fayette County Union, Elgin Echo and Fayette Leader asked the opinions of two juniors and an underclassman, who would be most affected by this change.

We spoke with Marrah Burrack, a junior from Wadena; Alexis Gage, a junior from Hawkeye, who attended Valley schools before the merger; and Brooks Hovden, a sophomore from West Union.

Volunteering is the selfless act of a person giving his or her time to a cause or event without the expectation of pay. It can be as simple as helping to string up holiday garland around downtown light poles or helping run community organizations such as the West Union Chamber — A Main Street Community.

Gail Hackman, The Fayette County Union’s 2016 Citizen of the Year, may just be West Union’s hardest-working volunteer.
