Turkey River banks stabilized in Elgin

The August 2016 flood removed riprap along portions of the Turkey River bank in Elgin that protected Gilbertson Park and the Elgin wastewater treatment plant. In late January, that riprap was replaced using FEMA, state and local funds. LeAnn Larson photo

Riprap was recently restored to portions of the bank along the Turkey River in Elgin.

The August 2016 flood removed a considerable amount of riprap that protected Fayette County Conservation’s Gilbertson Park and the Elgin Wastewater Treatment Plant. A $54,000 project was completed in late January to restore the banks to its pre-flood form.

The riprap protecting Gilbertson Park was originally placed in 1993 to keep the Turkey River from cutting into the Fayette County park. It survived numerous floods, including the 2008 flood. Rod Marlatt, Fayette County Conservation executive director, theorized that the ground was oversaturated with moisture, which allowed the river to wash away portions of the bank.

An end to pain and the gift of a new beginning

Jennifer Schott, who underwent fusion/disc replacement surgery on her lower back in the spring of 2016, is gradually increasing her activities. She hopes that rehab activities like this will allow her to achieve her goal of a healthy and balanced lifestyle.

For Jennifer Schott, back pain had almost become an accepted part of life. From the time she was a teenager she had experienced back issues, with intermittent chronic back pain plaguing her for more than 25 years during her adult life. As time went on, she began to realize that back pain was robbing her of the healthy and balanced lifestyle for which she longed.

“It was about two years ago when my pain increased to the point where I could no longer do many of the things I enjoyed. I couldn’t walk, sit, do yoga poses, clean, or even lie down for any extended period of time without experiencing pain or aches in my back, legs, or hips,” explained Schott, who learned in 2012 she was suffering from degenerative disc disease in the lumbar spine.

Teachers, school board speak on collective bargaining

Teachers, school board speak on collective bargaining

On Feb. 17, Governor Terry Branstad signed into law a controversial collective-bargaining bill that made sweeping changes to that process.

Many public employees across Iowa gathered on Tuesday, Feb. 14, at the Iowa Capitol to voice their displeasure of the bill prior to it passing in the Legislature. Over recent weeks, local public employees, including many area teachers, have attended town hall events with their state representatives to voice their concerns and objections to the passage of the bill.

Despite the opposition, the bill passed the Iowa Senate, 29-21, and Iowa House, 53-47. However, many Democrats were very critical of the quick passage of the legislation. Shortly after, Iowa Senate Minority Leader Rob Hogg of Cedar Rapids called it “a travesty of the democratic system” as well as “a garbage process.”
