SB sweeps Dogs, splits at Jesup

With a big smile, Megan Feldman watches as her towering fly ball sails over the right-field fence for the senior’s first varsity home run. Feldman’s blast gave the TigerHawks a 1-0 lead in the first inning on the way to an 12-7 win in the first game against MFL/MM Monday, June 5, in West Union. (Jerry Wadian photo)

The TigerHawks started the week by sweeping MFL/MM, 12-7 and 11-4, Monday, June 5, in West Union. Over the weekend, NFV split four games at the Jesup Tournament.

Monday, senior Megan Feldman got NFV off on the right foot in game one with a towering fly ball that cleared the right-field fence with plenty to spare for her first varsity homer.

The TigerHawks added five more runs in the second and four more in the third to take a commanding 10-2 lead.

However, the Bulldogs managed a four-run fifth to stay in the game.

The game ended with a MFL/MM pop fly behind Feldman at second. As she backpedaled, the wind blew the ball far enough to tick off the end of her glove. However, it deflected right into the glove of hard-charging right-fielder Jenna Bruns, who alertly snared the ball for the final out.

Sometimes we need a reminder of what small towns are capable of.

Maynard proved how small towns band together for a good cause when its new Maynard Public Library opened its doors for the first time on Monday, June 5.

Expansion had been discussed among Maynard Public Library board members for some time as the former location was overcrowded. However, it wasn’t until 2012 that the ball really got rolling when the Maynard Historical Society approached the group with a donation. The Society had recently inherited a large sum of money and decided to share $150,000 of it for the renovation of the former building.

In 2014, the board realized that renovation wasn’t the best route and purchased the empty lot just a couple doors to the east of the former location, which is when fundraising really started to get underway. The board credits Lezlie Barry, Maynard Public Library librarian; Judy Hoeger, assistant librarian; and Kelly Beacom, Maynard City Council member, with writing all the grants that were secured for the project.

The Fifth Annual West Union Block Party will kick off a summer of special events in West Union on Thursday, June 22, while promoting local businesses.

The annual Block Party was started in 2012, just after the completion of the NAPA, McJ’s Embroidery, and Unionland Feed and Supply block of the West Union Downtown Streetscape Project.

“When we started it, it was because our block was finally open again, and we were trying to get people to come back into town and to our businesses,” said Joni Spies, volunteer event organizer. “People aren’t excited about coming to West Union to shop, I don’t care what anybody says. So, the whole idea behind the Block Party is to get people excited about shopping in West Union.

The Block Party gives West Union businesses a chance to promote themselves and show area residents, not just West Union residents, what they have to offer. The event isn’t just for downtown businesses, as any West Union business is welcome to participate.
