The 2017 TigerHawk football team will be on display for the first time at the annual Sports Drink Scrimmage on Thursday.

NFV fans can get a glimpse of their team by bringing a bottle of any kind of sports drink. These drinks are vital for the players’ hydration, especially early in the season.

The big night of football will kick off at 7 p.m. with the freshmen and sophomores showing their potential.

The varsity scrimmage showcasing the 2017 TigerHawks will begin at 8 p.m.

The regular season kicks off Friday, Aug. 25, at 7:30 p.m. as Class 3A Decorah visits West Union in a nondistrict match. Last year in Decorah, NFV beat the Vikings, 28-7.

Archers arriving Friday

Be careful walking in the woods at Volga River Recreation Area (VRRA) this weekend You never know what might be there – like this elephant “hiding “ in the bushes. Obviously, it is not a live pachyderm, but one of the 100 3-D targets being used in the Rinehart R100 Archery Tour this Friday through Sunday at Lookout Peak. The event is open to the general public at no fee. (Jerry Wadian photo)

Friday through Sunday the Volga River Recreation Area (VRRA) will be a beehive of activity. In addition to all of the normal weekend users of the area, the Rinehart R100 Archery Tour will be at Lookout Peak using the newly christened Don Avenson Archery Course for its third annual competition.

Sponsored by Echo Valley Archers (EVA), the tour has brought over 600 people to northeast Iowa in each of the past two years. This year, EVA hopes to draw as many as 700 or even 800 over the course of the three-day event.

The tour includes two one-mile loops for a total of 100 3-D targets. There is a full-size giraffe, half-size elephant, and new this year, a full-size lion.

SW alum excited to join teaching staff

By Zakary Kriener

With the start of the 2017-2018 school year just over two weeks away, teachers, administrators, and school staff are ramping up for another year in the South Winneshiek school district. When students return to the classroom on Aug. 24, a new but familiar face will be teaching first grade in Ossian.

Sara (Lensing) Bernhard, a 2007 graduate of South Winneshiek High School, is looking forward to beginning her career as a Warrior teacher.

“From when I first started teaching several years ago, coming home and teaching in the district I graduated high school from is something that has always been a goal of mine,” said Bernhard, who along with husband Andy and 10-month-old son Bentley, are living in Calmar. “I’m glad that goal has turned into a reality.”
