North Fayette Valley fans, it’s time to break out your best TigerHawk gear and help the students at NFV finish celebrating Homecoming Week!

Homecoming Week is Monday, Sept. 18 through Friday, Sept. 22. Each day of the week the students at NFV are encouraged to participate in different dress-up days. Those included Millionaire Monday, on which students were to dress in their best attire, and Twin Tuesday, on which pairs of students were to dress the same.

The remainder of the dress-up days are as follows: What the Heck Are You Wearing Wednesday — students should dress in a wacky, but still appropriate outfits; Throwback Thursday — students should wear something from the past; and Spirit Day Friday — students should dress in school colors.

The theme for Homecoming this year is a simple one, “NFV Homecoming.” This will be the final school year that North Fayette and Valley are officially two separate districts.

“We want to celebrate our schools and communities as a united North Fayette Valley and show others what it means to be NFV,” said Jon Kullen, NFV Student Council advisor.

Thursday afternoon, North Fayette Valley students will be giving back to the communities they call home with service projects throughout the district. Students will also be working on Homecoming floats throughout the week.

The TigerHawks will host a massive Homecoming parade starting at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21, on the courthouse square in West Union. It will be followed by a community pep rally, at which the Homecoming Court will be introduced.

On Friday, the North Fayette Valley cross country team will continue its annual tradition of taking turns running the game ball from the opposing team’s school to the high school, arriving just in time for the districtwide pep rally to begin. This year, the cross country team won’t have as far to run with the football team’s opponent, the Oelwein Huskies, located in southern Fayette County.

The TigerHawks will look to crush the Oelwein Huskies in the annual Homecoming football game, which kicks off at 7:30 p.m.

Every year North Fayette Valley students select a Homecoming Court. The court this year includes Gene Anne Berst, Marrah Burrack, Marin Ehler, Macy Halverson, Claire Hanson, Lukas Olson, Jordan Baumler, Wyatt Van Sickle, Jace Burrow, and Garrett Lauer.

Preserving goodness through generations

Karen Dyke started canning many years ago, and it quickly became one of her favorite pastimes. One of the most rewarding aspects of her hobby is watching granddaughters Ashley and Erica begin to take an interest in canning as well. (Erica Dyke photo)

“The fresher, the better,” said a beaming Karen Dyke, Eldorado resident and longtime canning aficionado, of her canning hobby.

“It’s all fresh-picked from the garden or locally grown.  All of the nutrients are still there when I seal them up,” she said of her finished products. “Much better than a lot of the store-bought alternatives.”

Lima Church in rural Fayette has spent 2017 celebrating its 135th anniversary.

Lima Leaf Day from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 1, will be the unofficial conclusion to that celebration.

Lima Church was built in 1882 by farmers who lived in the area north of Fayette. The original pews, which are still used today, were built by local woodworkers. Lumber for the church was taken from local trees, while lumber for the “fancier” woodworking at the church was bought in Dubuque.

“At the time the church was built, Upper Iowa University had a Methodist seminary,” said Pat Baumler, Lima Church and Cemetery Association treasurer. “The seminary students would come out to Lima on Sundays for the service, but the church never had an official denomination.”
