A day after signing the Empower Rural Iowa Act, Iowa governor Kim Reynolds made a stop in West Union and visited with a couple local businesses.

    Arlene Clara (Brincks) Lansing quietly departed the hill country of Northeast Iowa to join her beloved husband, Lawrence, in heaven on May 23 after a brief illness. She was 82. Memorial services will be held Saturday, June 1st, at 1:00 PM at St. Francis de Sales Church in Ossian, IA, with Fr. Robert Gross officiating. Inurnment will be at the church cemetery. Friends may call from 11:00 AM until the time of services Saturday at the church. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, IA, is handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be to St. Francis de Sale Church for their maintenance fund.

Opening day for South Winneshiek baseball was held Monday, May 20, at Luther College in Decorah as the Class 1A No. 8-ranked Warriors took on Class 2A No. 10-ranked New Hampton.

The Warriors took an early lead in the bottom of the first after a leadoff walk by junior Noah Tieskoetter, followed by a stolen base, lead to a fielder’s choice RBI by Kody Kleve.

New Hampton tied the game in the third inning and then got what proved to be the big hit in the game, a three-run double to take a 4-1 lead in the fifth inning.

In a 2019 State Golf Meet that was shortened due to weather, South Winn’s Braden Lensing officially finished tied for 30th in Class 1A with a day one score of 92.

The fourth annual Logan’s Hope 5K will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 15, in Decorah. 

The annual event, put on by rural Waucoma’s Logan Manderfield and his family, aims to raise money for Duchenne muscular dystrophy research. 

Last year, the event raised over $20,000 for the cause and the Manderfields, including father Don and mother Lyndsey, are hoping to surpass that mark.

Mary Kay Torkelson, 89, of Elgin, Iowa died Tuesday, May 21, 2019 at Gundersen Palmer Hospital in West Union, Iowa. Mary Kay was born September 13, 1929 to Wilbur and Helen (Peyer) Thornton in Postville, Iowa. She graduated from Postville High School.  After graduation, Mary attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa, now known as University of Northern Iowa, earning her two year teaching certificate.
