If high school football was a fight card, Friday night’s battle between a pair of undefeated Class A squads would undoubtedly be heralded… or maybe Herolded… as the main event.

After the dust had settled, No. 5-ranked South Winn quarterback Jacob Herold and his Warrior team would come out ahead of the rival No. 4-ranked Wapsie Valley Warriors, 26-14.

It’s a staple of northeast Iowa; a right of passage for many youth to grow up in the area. Now, after 33 years in the business, Jewel’s Skate Country is closing its doors.

“I am definitely going to miss the people,” said Don Jewell, who has owned and operated the skating rink since 1987. “It might not really hit me until everything is moved out, but it has been my life for many years so it’s going to me a little emotional.”

Jewell, a native of Olympia, Washington, moved to La Crosse, Wisc., in the late ‘80s and learned of a new skate facility being built near Decorah. A passionate skater already, he and a group of friends traveled south to check it out.

Just like many activities and previously normal routines in 2020, this year’s upcoming Halloween holiday is expected to be a little different this fall. Last week, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) released its Halloween suggestions and guidelines to help reduce the spread of COVID-19.

The CDC recommends to avoid activities that are higher risk for spread and to consider fun alternatives that pose lower risk of spreading the virus.

The traditional citywide trick-or-treating event in Ossian will be discussed at the upcoming City Council meeting, which will be held at 5 p.m. Monday.

The Blue Devil football team put up some of its best offensive numbers of the season, but it wasn’t quite enough to notch a win as West Central fell to Central by a score of 56-48.

“Offensively, we were pretty balanced and thought 48 points would be enough for victory,” said coach Steve Milder after his team slid to 0-4 on the season. “I was very proud of our kids. We fought hard for 48 minutes.”
