It was a record setting day for the South Winneshiek cross country program as for the first time both the Warrior boys and girls won their District Meet in the same year.

The teams competed Friday afternoon in Guttenburg, one day later than initially scheduled to run as the meet was moved back 24 hours due to heavy rain.

In thrilling fashion, the Warrior football team advanced onto the next round of the Class A playoffs on Friday night with a 21-14 win over a strong Lake Mills team.

South Winn took command early in the game, forcing a pair of Bulldog turnovers on their first two possessions of the game.

Francis Joseph Wenthold, 88, of Ossian, Iowa died Wednesday, October 21, 2020 at his home.  Francis was born March 26, 1932 to Henry and Margaret (Kleve) Wenthold in Festina, Iowa. He attended St. Mary’s Catholic School in Festina. Francis farmed with his brother Ed until he joined the United States Army in 1952, and served in the Korean War.

If you haven’t stocked up on candy or decided your Halloween costume yet, you better hurry up because Halloween is here! This weekend, many area communities will be holding trick-or-treating. Here is a list of dates and times to participate in spooky season activities:

  •  Festina – Friday, Oct. 30 from 5 to 7 p.m.
  •  Ossian – Saturday, Oct. 31 from 5 to 8 p.m.
  •  Calmar – Saturday, Oct. 31 from 5 to 7 p.m.
  •  Spillville – Saturday, Oct. 31 from 6 to 8 p.m.

As a reminder, if a family does not feel comfortable participating in trick-or-treating this year, they are welcome to keep their children home and leave their porch light off.

Voters from Ossian, Castalia and the surrounding area will see, along with the national races, the following candidates on their ballots when they go to the polls, Tuesday, Nov. 3.

State Senate District 28 – Democrat Matt Tapscott of Decorah and Republican Mike Klimesh of Spillville will both be looking for first-time seats in the Senate.

Mark Anthony Kruse, age 53 of Smyrna, TN passed away unexpectedly on October 1, 2020 in Kuwait.  He was born to Melvin and Mary (Kout) Kruse of Lawler on June 1, 1967.  He grew up in Lawler, IA and attended Turkey Valley Community Schools until he graduated in 1985.  While in school he wrestled and was heavily involved in music and drama.  Shortly after graduating, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, where he served honorably as a maintenance management specialist for twenty years.  

While stationed in Willow Grove, PA, Mark attended a Navy Ball where he met the woman who would be the love of his life.  Mark and Joanna were married on April 13, 1996.  From this union, two daughters were born, Hannah Jeannette and Emma Gabrielle, both while Mark was serving as a Marine Corps recruiter in Fargo, ND.  Mark and his family would move to Okinawa, Japan where they would live until he retired from active duty.

Sheldon Fox, 96, of Oelwein, formerly of Randalia, passed away Tuesday, October 20, 2020 at Oelwein Healthcare Center. A private family service will be held at the Geilenfeld-Buehner Funeral Home in Oelwein with inurnment at the Greenwood Cemetery near Westgate. A public Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. A memorial fund has been established. For condolences, please visit www.geilenfeldfh.com.

Sheldon Eugene Fox was born June 6, 1924 on the family farm in rural Westgate to parents Roy Earl and Nellie Jane (Palmerston) Fox. He attended country school through 8th grade and then Maynard High School. On November 29, 1945 he was united in marriage with Mary “Betty” Woods at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Fayette.

We are rejoicing that Lester Clair Shogren is now in heaven singing with his Lord and Savior.

There will be a memorial service Saturday, October 31st at Center Baptist Church in Lansing. Friends may visit beginning at 10 a.m., with the service following at 11 a.m., and lunch at the church afterward.  Interment will be in the Center Baptist Cemetery. 

Lester was born June 26, 1933 to Clarence and Lillian Shogren, in Waukon, Iowa.  He graduated from Waukon High School in 1951, and served in the US Army during the Korean War from 1953 to 1955.  

Lester married June Godfrey on April 1, 1963 in Iowa City.  He worked for Western Electric for thirteen years, during which time the family moved frequently.  They settled in Allamakee County to farm from 1973 until 1987.  Lester also worked for the Telephone Company, Dee Implement, Bituma Corporation, and Systems Equipment Corp.

Sylvan James Taylor, 86, of Clermont, Iowa died Friday, October 23, 2020 at Good Samaritan Society in West Union, Iowa. Sylvan James was born March 15, 1934 to James and Selma (Olson) Taylor in Pleasant Valley Township, Fayette County, Iowa. He was baptized April 22, 1934 and confirmed June 1, 1945, both at East Clermont Lutheran Church in Clermont, Iowa. Sylvan graduated from Clermont High School in 1953.
