The South Winneshiek softball team continued its midseason slump last week as it lost all four of its matchups. After a strong 8-3 start to the 2021 campaign, the Warrior girls have lost 10 of their last 11 games.

Summer live performance at the Ossian Pavilion to feature 'Mike McAbee'

 

 

The second  of eight live summer performances at the Ossian Educational and Performance Pavilion will take place on Wednesday, July 7, at 7:30 p.m. Mike McAbee, local vocalist and guitarist, will be featured for this live performance. 

Other events include another movie night, tonight, Wednesday, June 30, at 7:30 p.m. featuring "Soul Surfer.” The movie‘s sponsor is Bushman Insurance. Another movie night will take place on Sunday, July 11.  The movie, “Inside Out” is sponsored by G & R Tiling.

Betty "Beth" Morse, 73, of Hawkeye, Iowa passed away on Tuesday, June 22, 2021 at her home surrounded by her loving family.

  Funeral services wereheld at 9 a.m. on Saturday June 26, 2021 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye with Rev. Ron Roberts officiating. Burial followed in Alpha Cemetery near Alpha, Iowa.

  A public visitation was held from 4 until 7 p.m. on Friday June 25, 2021 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye.

  Beth was born in Paletine, Illinois on March 26, 1948 to Lee and Lois Mae (Suess) Wilkie. Beth attended grade school in Alpha and North High in West Union.

  Beth was a member of the Lions Club, Hawkeye Community Club Member and worked as the manager of Tex’s Bar & Grill. She enjoyed fishing and going out to eat.

  Beth enjoyed being with her family, especially her grandchildren. Family meant a lot to her.

Laverne Ida (Fischer) Butikofer, age 85, died June 22, 2021, at Copper Creek Senior Living in West Union, IA. She was born December 5, 1935, to Samuel and Ida (Rechkemmer) Fischer and was raised near Roanoke, IL. LaVerne was baptized in the Apostolic Christian Church and remained a faithful member. After high school, LaVerne worked as a bookkeeper at several area car dealerships. 

LaVerne was united in marriage to Albert Butikofer on August 7, 1966. Together they farmed southeast of Elgin for 33 years. Al and LaVerne moved to Elgin in May of 2000, where they lived until their move to Copper Creek in January of 2021. LaVerne will be remembered for her compassion and interest in others.

SSG (ret.) Barry Lee Paige, 73, of West Union, Iowa died Wednesday, June 16, 2021 at Veteran’s Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa. Barry was born September 20, 1947 to Robert and Jeanette (Hulse) Paige in Waterloo, Iowa. He graduated from North High School in West Union, Iowa. In 1967, he joined the 101st Airborne Division and served honorably in the Vietnam War.  As a serviceman, Mr. Paige earned several awards and commendations, including the Combat Infantry Badge, the Vietnamese Cross for Gallantry, and a Purple Heart. 

On December 4, 1970, Barry married Diane Olson and out of this union they had three children. They divorced in 1991. Barry remarried in 1994, to Michelle Kneeland. Throughout the years when he wasn’t “playing Army” he pursued many trades. Once retired from the Army, he followed wherever the road took him, from Iowa to Louisiana.  He always had an avid love for farming and John Deere tractors.

Leslie Ray Thompson, 70, of West Union, Iowa died Saturday, June 19, 2021 at his home in West Union, Iowa.  Leslie Ray was born January 24, 1951 to Floyd and Florence (Bergeson) Thompson in West Union, Iowa. He graduated from North High School in 1969.

On February 12, 1972, Leslie was united in marriage with Laurie Kazynski at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Ossian, Iowa.  Throughout the years, Leslie drove semi for H&H for twenty-eight years and was District Sales Rep for Martin Bros for twenty-one years until his retirement.

Leslie was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed playing cards, golfing, bowling, washing his truck and going to coffee group.

Mary Strong

Mary Strong

 

Mary Ellen (Enyart) Strong, daughter of Hollis and Velma Enyart was born February 1, 1930, in Postville, Iowa.  She passed away on Friday, June 25, 2021, at the age of 91.

Mary was baptized in the Presbyterian Church, which she later joined.  She eventually transferred to the Illyria Community Church.

She attended Grand Meadow County School through the seventh grade and finished eighth grade and graduated from Postville High School. 

On December 23, 1952, Mary was married to Myrten Strong.  To this union were born two sons, David and Robert, and a daughter, Cindy Sue (deceased).

Mary and Myrten farmed near Postville and Frankville, Iowa.  They later moved to Elgin, where they farmed until 1973.  While they were farming, they received a Farm Bureau Safety Award for Iowa.

Berdena M. Hoepfner, 95, of Hawkeye, died Sunday, June 20, 2021, at Maple Crest Manor in Fayette.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, June 24, 2021, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye with Rev. Ron Roberts officiating. Burial followed at Wilson Grove Cemetery, rural Sumner. Visitation was held on Wednesday, June 23 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Becker & Son Funeral Home in Sumner and for one hour preceding services at the Church on Thursday.
