NICC to host Fall Fest

 

 

Fall Fest is back at Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) this fall as an evening of fun and entertainment is set for Thursday, Sept. 9, on the Calmar campus.

From 5 until 8 p.m., the whole family can come out for food, inflatabales, rides, fireworks, and carnival games for kids of all ages. It’s the kick-off to fall you won’t want to miss!

The excitement will be held on the main campus at 1625 Hwy 150 S., Calmar.

Massive search effort ends with finding missing Decorah student

At approximately 9:30 on Monday morning, Decorah High School student Brandon Quam walked away from the school. Quam, who has special needs and is considered non-responsive, was later located in town at 8:28 p.m. following a large-scale search party that canvassed much of the community.

Catherine “Cathy” Irene Bemiss, 75, of West Union, Iowa died Saturday, August 14, 2021 at Stoney Brook Village, West Union. She was born January 11, 1946 to James Calvin and Marjorie Lou (Martin) Renwick in Sumner, Iowa. Cathy was baptized in Alpha, confirmed and married at Zion Lutheran Church. She graduated from North High School, West Union in 1964. Upon graduation, she worked at Northwestern Bell and then transferred to the Norfolk, Nebraska office. She returned to West Union and ran a preschool for several years.

Kate N. Michels, 15, of Maynard, Iowa died Sunday afternoon, August 22, 2021, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa. 

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 27, 2021, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oelwein with Fr. Ray Atwood officiating. Visitation will be from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, August 26, 2021, and from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Friday at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Maynard. Interment will be at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Oelwein.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, social distancing and face masks are suggested at the visitation.  Face masks will be required at the funeral Mass.

Donald Wayne “Andy” Vagts, 90, of West Union, Iowa, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, August 7, 2021.

Services will be held Saturday, August 28, at 11:00 a.m., at Redeemer Lutheran Church, West Union, with a visitation being held on Friday, August 27 at the church from 4-7 p.m.

Andy was born December 17, 1930, in Eldorado, Iowa to Lawrence and Mabel (Scheelhaase) Vagts. He attended a one-room school house in Eldorado until the 8th grade when he went on to graduate from North High School in West Union in 1948. After high school, he farmed with his father, Lawrence, and his uncle Ewald, and also worked for Melvin and Reynold Baumler in their logging and sawmill business, along with his brother Kenny. In 1951, he enlisted in the Air Force, where he served in Japan before being honorably discharged in December of 1954. After returning, he worked for Paul Benshoof at Treasure Acres in Blairsburg, Iowa, raising show hogs.
