Linus “Linny” Francis Rothmeyer, 89, of Calmar, Iowa, died Friday, November 5, 2021, at Barthell Eastern Star Home in Decorah, Iowa. Funeral services were held Saturday November 20, 2021 at the Calmar Lutheran Church, Calmar, Iowa with Rev, Daryl Thompson and Deacon MaryAnn Schwabe officiating. Interment was in the Calmar Lutheran Cemetery, Calmar, Iowa.

Joyce Meyer, age 64, of Spillville, IA, passed away on Saturday, November 20, 2021 at her home in Spillville with her family by her side after losing her battle with bone cancer. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, November 24, 2021 at 11 a.m. in the St Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Spillville, Iowa with interment at the St. Wenceslaus Cemetery, Spillville. Arrangements were by Schluter Balik Funeral Home, Decorah, IA.

Schultz family creates lasting legacy through Walden Pond donation

 

 

The Schultz Family—James (Jim) and Sharon Schultz and their daughters Wendy Schultz and Rebecca and her husband Michael Perez—have donated their family property in rural Castalia to the Winneshiek County Conservation Board.

The 133-acre property will be known as “Walden Pond: Roy and Genevieve Schultz Memorial Outdoor Discovery Area” and includes a 5-acre pond; several miles of hiking trails; a walnut, oak, and maple “sugar bush” woodland; and restrooms and an enclosed picnic shelter for classroom spaces.

On Tuesday (Nov. 16), Upper Iowa Speedway announced that it had sold all assets and equipment to the Winneshiek County Ag Society. The track, which is a ¼-mile dirt semi-banked racetrack, is situated in downtown Decorah and features five weekly classes of racing (USRA Stock Cars, USRA B-Mods, USRA Hobby Stocks, USRA Tuners, and 600 Mod-Lites).

Elmer Moss

Elmer Moss

 

Elmer Moss, 90, of West Union, Iowa, passed away Monday,  Nov. 1, 2021, at Stoney Brook Assisted Living in West Union, Iowa.  He was born on January 24, 1931, to Neal and Tillie Moss in Carmel, Iowa. He attended a country school.  He was united in marriage with Harriet Renes, the love of his life, at her parent’s home on June 11, 1951. They made their home on Elmer’s family farm near Carmel, Iowa where they began their family.  

     Elmer continued farming, on the family farm.  From there he started his sales career for OCCO Feeds, where he moved up the ladder to District and then Division Manager.  As he was promoted to the Division Manager position, it required moving his family to West Union, Iowa.    

     Staying in sales, he worked for various other companies including AAA, M&M Feeds, CEN-PE-CO Oil Co., and Conklin.  In 1978 he began a business, Moss Roofing, with two of his sons.

Donald P. Westendorf, Jr., 59, of Maynard, Iowa, died Thursday morning, November 18, 2021, at his home with loving family by his side, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Mass of Christian Burialwas held at 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, November 23, 2021, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Fayette. Visitationwas from 3:00 to 8:00 P.M. Monday, November 22, 2021, at Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Maynard and for one hour before the service at the church. Interment was in the Long Grove Cemetery in Maynard.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, social distancing and masks are suggested at the visitation, masks are required at the church.

Marilyn Janis Larson was born in Dr. Jerdee’s office in Clermont, Iowa on August 26, 1933 to Aines and Harriet (Amundson) Olson.  She was the 2ndof five sisters.  Marilyn grew up on the Olson family farm 3 miles east of Clermont. Marilyn was baptized and confirmed at the East Clermont Lutheran Church, rural Clermont.  She attended country school at the Grand Meadow Township #8 “Olson” School, 7th- 8thgrades at the Larrabee School in Clermont and was a 1950 graduate of Clermont High School.  Following graduation, she worked in Dr. Jerdee’s office in Clermont.

On October 13, 1951 Marilyn married LaVerne R. Larson at the East Clermont Lutheran Church.  They became the parents of 3 girls and 3 boys; Ann, Lois, Gary, James, Barbara, and David.
