Friedrich to be ordained at Zion Lutheran

All West Union community members are welcome to attend or to be present in prayer with Susan Friedrich as she is ordained to the Ministry of Word and Sacrament in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. 

Zion Lutheran Church of West Union will host this special worship service with Holy Communion at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 9. 

The Rev. Dr. Steven Ullestad, bishop of the Northeastern Iowa Synod ELCA of Waverly, will be the presiding minister, with the Rev. David Grant, pastor of Zion Lutheran, West Union, as the presiding liturgical minister. Douglas Poppen will be the assisting minister and the Rev. Stephen Brackett, pastor of St. Paul Lutheran in Postville, will be the preaching minister. Special music will be provided by a combined choir from the Lutheran congregations of Zion, St. Paul and St. John with Leslie Poppen as director and worship accompanist. 

A luncheon and fellowship hosted by Zion Lutheran Church will follow the worship service.  

Susan Friedrich graduated from Wartburg Theological Seminary in Dubuque in May 2012 after four years of study, which included a term of pastoral internship at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville. 

She has been an associate in ministry in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America since 1991. From 1998 to 2004, she served Zion Lutheran Church, West Union, as well as numerous other congregations, as an associate in ministry.

Susan has accepted a call to serve as co-pastor at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sumner.

She is married to Norman Friedrich, an engineer in the Natural Resources Conservation Service office in West Union. They are the parents of four children: Tristan of Wichita, Kan., who is employed as an aerospace engineer at Cessna Aircraft; Benjamin of West Union, who is an Iowa State University graduate; Ethan, a sophomore student at University of South Dakota at Vermillion, S.D.; and Ellen, a senior at North Fayette High School.
