International Women’s Day on March 8

The Women of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Elgin invite you to come and ring the church bell in observance of International Women’s Day on Friday, March 8.  You are invited to enjoy rolls, muffins and coffee anytime between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m., or if you cannot stop in during those hours, come anytime between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. to ring our church bell.

Every time the bell rings, it is a prayer for women all over the world who live in poverty, are abused, do not receive fair compensation, do not receive political recognition, and for whom education is not available.

International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated on March 8 each year around the world. Thousands of events occur on this day and throughout March to mark the economic, political and social achievements of women. Organizations, governments, charities, educational institutions, women’s groups, corporations and the media celebrate the day.

Many groups around the world choose different themes each year relevant to global and local gender issues. The 2013 theme is “The Gender Agency: Gaining Momentum.
