Services held for retired area teacher

A memorial service for Lois A. Schuchmann, 91, of West Union, formerly of Hawkeye, were held Monday, March 11, at Zion Lutheran Church in West Union.

Inurnment followed in the West Union Cemetery.

Becker-Milnes Funeral Home of Hawkeye and Iowa Cremation of Cedar Rapids assisted the family.

Lois Adeline (Kiel) Schuchmann was born Sept. 13, 1921, on a farm south of West Union in Fayette County.  She was the oldest child of Louis and Blanche (Stansberry) Kiel. 

Baptized in First United Methodist Church, Fayette, she became a communicant member of Zion Lutheran Church, West Union, on Oct. 12, 1945.

Lois graduated from Fayette High School in 1939 and earned her B.A. degree from Upper Iowa University in 1965.  She took graduate classes from Iowa Teachers College in Cedar Falls and correspondence classes from the University of Iowa, Iowa City.  

Lois taught in Rowley, Maynard, Hawkeye, and West Union for a total of 32 years, retiring in 1984.  

On Jan. 7, 1944, she married Clarence Edwin Schuchmann at St. John’s Methodist Church in Grand Island, Neb.  

Lois returned to teaching in Maynard while Clarence flew to England to fly B17’s.

She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, Zion Lutheran Church’s Hannah Circle, and Town and Country Quilters Guild. In addition, Lois taped requested material for the Commission for the Blind library in Des Moines, for which she received an award from Governor Terry Branstad.

Lois and her grandson Troy resided together after the death of her husband, Clarence, in 2006, until Lois moved to Stoney Brook Assisted Living in West Union.  

In addition to her husband, Clarence, she was preceded in death by her parents; an infant daughter, Loraye; and her brother, Hubert Kiel.

Lois is survived by her son, Kent (Patricia) Schuchmann of West Union and their sons, Todd in Florida and Chad in North Carolina; her daughter, Alayne (James) McMillan of Modesto, Calif., and their sons Troy Youngblut of West Union, Jubal and Alexander of Modesto; nine great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; a brother-in-law, Al Schuchmann of Pinckey, Mich.; many other relatives, friends and former students.

Memorial donations may be given to the Iowa Department for the Blind, 524 4th Street, Des Moines, IA  50309-2364, or to a charity of the donor’s choosing.
