Behind host Decorah and Crestwood, another Class 3A powerhouse, the Lady Warriors managed to claim third place on Friday in the team standings.

“Overall, I was pleased with our team’s performance. We were able to accumulate over 90 points, scoring in 17 of 19 events. That is a good start for this team,” said South Winn coach Kevin Kearney.

Despite cold, windy, and damp conditions, the South Winn girls managed several top-three finishes including golds by Abby Phillips in the high jump and Lexie Warth in the 100m hurdles.

Phillips, a junior, also claimed silver in the long jump and was a member of the fourth-place 4x400 team.

With a time of 12:09.23 in the 3000m run, Jessica Lechtenberg claimed the runner-up spot and later garnered a fourth-place finish in the 1500m run with a time of 6:03.84.

Brittany Shindelar had a spectacular outing with a third-place finish in the 200m dash, a pair of fourth-place finishes in the shot put and 4x400; she added a fifth-place finish in the 100m dash.

Scoring a pair of bronze finishes was Kennidee DeVilbiss in the 400m hurdles and the 400m dash.

“We still need to have more kids begin to make breakthroughs and step up to fill relay positions. Right now, we are not very strong in our relays and are basically one to two legs short of fielding a competitive team in every relay we have,” concluded Kearney.

Weather permitting, the Lady Warriors will return to the Decorah track for competition on Friday before taking a long road trip to Hudson on Monday, April 15.
