SW takes fifth at home Invite

With three guys in the finals and three more wrestling for third, SW head coach Jacob Elsbernd was happy with how his team competed on Saturday, finishing fifth of the 10 teams at the annual South Winn Invitational.

Landers Kuboushek and Chris Brincks each ended the day with a title, while Ryan Hageman finished second.

“I am very pleased about how our guys wrestled this weekend,” said Elsbernd. “We are starting to wrestle with some confidence and that can play a big role in the results of matches.”

At 182 lbs. Kuboushek collected a pair of falls en route to the championship bout versus MFL/MarMac’s Nathan Howe and won, 5-0, for the title.

Following a pair of byes, Brincks earned a pin over Sean Trewin of Decorah in 2:58 in the semifinals and pinned Osage’s Tommy Low in 1:39 to earn the 195 lb. title.

After scooping up a 3-1 overtime win in the semifinals over Osage’s Dillon Johnson, Ryan Hageman (170) earned a spot on the finals mat versus Dylan Meister of Denver/Tripoli, giving up a late takedown to finish runner-up on a 3-1 decision.

Junior Cody Fisher wrapped up the top three finishes for the Warrior matmen after pinning Brody Wright of Osage in 0:29 and Brody Bruce of St. Ansgar in 4:53.

“It was nice to compete at home and a good experience for our younger wrestlers to compete against some good teams and wrestlers. Our guys are learning from their mistakes, and that is always good to see as a coach,” noted Elsbernd.

On Tuesday, South Winn traveled to Jesup for a quartet of duals, but results were unavailable at press time.

The Warriors will wrap up the 2013 portion of the season Saturday at the Dike-New Hartford Duals before enjoying a two-week break from the competition mats.

“We will be working hard over Christmas break to get ready for our conference competitions,” concluded Elsbernd.
