SW takes nail-biter from Eagles, 45-44

They had two wins in UIC action, but the Lady Warriors really wanted the third over a well-coached Waukon team. However, they fell a bit short last week.

vs. West Central

South Winn danced into Maynard on Tuesday, Dec. 10, looking to get back on the winning track, and punished West Central to no end, defeating the Blue Devils, 57-12.

The Lady Warriors took a commanding 32-12 lead at halftime and held WC scoreless in the second half, led by Brittany Shindelar’s 19 points and Payton Poshusta’s 11.

Off the rim, it was Monica Schwartzhoff as the ace with five boards; Shindelar and Poshusta managed to be right behind with four apiece.

Micole Lansing seemed to be the queen of thievery with a team-high seven steals as the Lady Warriors improved to a 2-2 overall record.

vs. Waukon

The always-tough Waukon Indians came to town on Thursday, and the Lady Warriors looked poised to put on a show as they scampered to a 9-5 first-quarter lead. Several miscues in the final minute of the stanza allowed Waukon to scratch its way back to even par at 9-9.

The basket fell quiet in the second period for SW as it took nearly four minutes before Abby Phillips connected from the paint. Brittany Shindelar added a pair of buckets soon after, but the Lady Warriors went into the break trailing, 24-18.

Waukon was nearly flawless from the floor in the third quarter, pulling out to a 10-point lead with 2:06 remaining. However, Micole Lansing put a damper on the Indian run with a trey from straightaway to pull SW to 38-31.

With few options remaining, the Lady Warriors continued to put the Waukon athletes at the free throw line, which allowed the Indian lead to grow as SW fell, 57-40.

Shindelar nearly notched a double-double with 17 points and nine boards. Lansing anchored the Lady Warriors from behind the three-point arch with nine points, dished out seven assists and had four steals.

vs. Clayton Ridge

On Friday, the Lady Warriors came up big against a sizeable Clayton Ridge team for the 45-44 come-from-behind win.

Becca Franzen struck first for SW with nearly two minutes off the board when Kennidee DeVilbiss grabbed the ball midcourt and passed it to Franzen on the fast break. With another Franzen basket, a pair of Shindelar’s free throws and a trey by Lansing, SW sat on top of the Eagles, 9-4, after the first stanza.

It must have just taken awhile for CR to get warmed up because the Eagles outscored SW, 14-6, in the second to hold a narrow advantage, 18-15, at halftime.

The Franzen-Shindelar-Lansing trio gave the Warriors their only lead of the third quarter early on, 23-20, but CR stormed back to edge ahead, 31-27, after three quarters.

An old-fashioned three-point play for the Eagles pushed them even further out in front, 36-29, with 5:34 remaining, but the SW guards came alive late in the fourth quarter to overcome a nine-point deficit.

With 3:22 remaining, P. Poshusta hit a long ball to pull SW to within three, 37-34, before Franzen added her final basket of the game and Lansing poured in a trey to put the Lady Warriors on top, 39-38.

Lansing found the basket again from three-point range with 1:05 remaining to push SW ahead, 42-40. In the final 30 seconds, the composure of DeVilbiss at the free throw line allowed her to sink four points giving SW a cushion at 45-41. An Eagle “Hail Mary” shot from beyond the arch with nine ticks remaining worried the Lady Warriors, but they held on to win, 45-44.

“The girls worked very hard for that win and never lost their composure,” said SW head coach Sherry Poshusta. “It was a great win for the Warriors from a good Clayton Ridge team.”
