The West Central boys earned a UIC win, 45-35, Friday, Dec. 13, in Sumner. Injuries and fouls hurt the Devils in a 61-38 loss to South Winn Tuesday, Dec. 10, in Calmar.

Tuesday’s game was close for 16 minutes as the Devils only trailed South Winn by two, 27-25, at the break.

However, the second half was another story as the Devils could only put 13 points on the board.

Much of the problem came on fouls as a number of starters had to sit for significant time due to foul trouble. Sophomore guard Dustin Gordon was in trouble most of the night and eventually fouled out. Hud Johnston wound up with four fouls, and James Niemann collected three.

Ethan Steinbronn led the scoring, but his 16 points were half of his average. However, the junior scoring machine also saw time on the bench with a minor injury. He came close to a triple-double with nine rebounds and nine blocks.

Johnston was the second Blue Devil in double digits with 11 points. Matt Langel hauled down five boards and Gordon had four rebounds.
