Ivah Emma Marie (Schortau) Lawless was born on her family farm near Westgate, Iowa on September 18, 1914 to George and Ella (Greening) Schortau. She was baptized on October 11, 1914 and confirmed on March 24, 1929 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Westgate. She attended Westgate public school, graduating 8th grade in 1929.

Ivah was united in marriage to Floyd Lawless on April 21, 1938 in Waterloo, Iowa. To this union, six children were born. The couple farmed near West Union for many years.

Ivah passed away on January 11, 2014, at the Good Samaritan Center in West Union, Iowa. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and served in several church groups, including the president of WELCA. She enjoyed gardening, writing letters, crafts, singing and sewing. Ivah loved to bake, especially with walnuts. Ivah spent many hours studying her family’s history and always remembered family member’s birthday.

Ivah is survived by her children, Connie (Ronald) Schlatter of Bel Aire, Kansas, James (Diane) Lawless of Evansdale, Iowa, Kenneth (Mary) Lawless of West Union, Iowa, and Jeffrey (Teresa) Lawless of Bassett, Iowa; son-in-law, August Bindert of Hawkeye, Iowa; daughter-in-law, Gloria Lawless of Garwin, Iowa; 12 grandchildren; twenty one great grandchildren; eight great-great grandchildren; sisters, Eleanor Gehrke of Sumner, Iowa, Helen Rapp of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Adella (Jerry) Hohmann of Wheaton, Illinois, and Alyce (Fred) Pink of Phoenix, Arizona; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd in 2004; daughter, Patricia Bindert; son, Darold Lawless; parents, George and Ella Schortau; sisters, Mildred Wilson and Dorothy Sommars; an infant sister; brothers-in-law, J.D. Wilson and Otto Rapp; and nephews Steve Hohmann and Richard Gehrke.

Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Friday, January 17, 2014, at Zion Lutheran Church with a visitation from 9 am until service time. Burial will follow in Windsor Cemetery in rural West Union.
