It’s a common phrase: You win some; you lose some. The Lady Warriors don’t just want some, they want all, but free throws stood between them and the “W” last week in conference action.

vs. Sumner-Fred.

It was a slow start for South Winn at Sumner-Fredericksburg on Tuesday, Jan. 7, as the Cougars sprinted out to a 12-5 in the opening stanza.

That lead was extended to 25-12 at halftime in spite of Payton Poshusta’s trey and short bucket. Brittany Shindelar was the only other Lady Warrior to score in the paint.

In the third quarter, South Winn kept pace with the Cougars, narrowing the margin to 44-35, due in part to P. Poshusta’s trio of long shots. Micole Lansing added a pair of treys in the Lady Warrior effort, as well.

With the margin closer, South Winn continued to push the Cougars to the free throw line and trailed merely by four points, 46-42, with 3:09 remaining. S-F connected on nine of 10 charity tosses in the closing two minutes to take the conference win, 59-44, from the Lady Warriors.

Despite being held to Brittany Shindelar’s two buckets in the second stanza, the Lady Warriors remained confident as they held the Wildcats scoreless in the final three quarters of the nonconference game. South Winn danced away with the 52-9 nonconference win.
