South Winn wrestling collected two big wins Thursday night in dual matches over Starmont, 40-34, and Turkey Valley, 34-33, even with three varsity wrestlers out of the lineup.
“Each guy was able to step up at some point during the night and pick up a big win or wrestle a close match where they could have given up bonus points,” praised SW coach Jake Elsbernd. “I feel good about our effort and can see our guys starting to make some nice improvements in their wrestling. I would like to see us continue to wrestle hard and become even more aggressive during the matches.”
Luke Massman (113), Ryan Hageman (170), and Landers Kuboushek (182) each won three of three matches in the dual action.
Massman picked up a pair of falls and a forfeit for his perfect evening, while Hageman earned a 17-5 major decision and a pair of falls. Kuboushek saw a little bit of everything on the mat with a fall, forfeit, and a 6-0 decision victory.
Chris Brincks had a good night going until he faced top-ranked Tyler Hoffman of East Buchanan, taking the match into the third period but falling in 4:52.

To place fifth in the team standings with only seven wrestlers competing is quite an accomplishment for the Warrior matmen, but that is exactly what happened Saturday at the Denver-Tripoli Invitational.
South Winn (105) edged out North Fayette Valley (104.5) for that fifth spot with a pair of champions, Ryan Hageman (170) and Chris Brincks (195).
Hageman, who is currently ranked seventh in Class 1A at 170 lbs. had faced 10th-ranked Trevor Pagel of Sumner-Fredericksburg and sixth-ranked Schuyler Rilling of Woodbury Central to secure his 170 lb. title.
Brincks has moved into the fourth spot in Class 1A at 195 lbs. He wrangled his spot into the finale with a 0:41 throw of Matt Negen of Clarksville and pinned Matt Montgomery of Lisbon in 2:40.
“Each wrestler finished the tournament at or above what they were seeded,” noted Elsbernd. “This was the most complete day of wrestling that we have had this season, and I feel good about the progress we are making.”
Also making the podium were Landers Kuboushek (182) and Ethan Kipp (220). Kipp defeated Class 2A third-ranked Tyler Johansen of North Fayette Valley in overtime to move into the championship match. The junior then met Mason Lovrien of Clarksville and was thrown in 0:30.
In a 4-0 decision eighth-ranked Kuboushek took care of business in his opening match of the day versus Lisbon’s Jordan Woodward. In the final, Kuboushek faced a nemesis in seventh-ranked Derek Kohlmeyer from Sumner-Fredericksburg and fell victim in 4:45.
After throwing Clarksville’s Adam Lovrien in 1:59, it was a hard road for Ben Meyer into third place as he faced top-ranked Cody Nelson of North Butler next. Falling to Nelson, Meyer fought his way back through the brackets to third with a 7-6 decision of S-F’s Bodie Garnier.
“We will need to continue to improve and finish strong in the next few weeks of competition and also get ready for the Sectional tournament in February,” concluded Elsbernd.
