The West Central girls’ basketball team played its best basketball of the season through the first half of Saturday’s (Jan. 11) matchup with Class 3A Oelwein.

A cold-shooting second half allowed the Huskies to escape, 66-31. On Tuesday, the girls lost at MFL/MM, 61-20. Friday’s home game against Postville was postponed by rain and fog until Monday, Feb. 3.

The game at Oelwein was a real tussle for the first 16 minutes.

“We played extremely hard on offense and defense,” explained head coach Holly Mohs. “On defense, we made them miss, and offensively we got into a rhythm and hit our shots, especially some big three’s when we needed them.”

The Huskies used strong offensive rebounding to lead, 29-22, at the half.

WC went cold as ice in the second half, going just 1-15 from the field.

“We continued to play hard, but couldn’t get our shots to fall,” noted Mohs.

Madee Grimm led the Devils with 10 points, including a pair of treys. Erin Lehs hit three long bombs for her nine points. Jenni Hollinrake added nine rebounds.

“The team played hard throughout; it was great to see them compete with such a tough team,” Mohs concluded.
