It’s hard to overcome 41 points at the charity stripe, but that is exactly what the Lady Warriors faced versus Ed-Co at home on Friday, as SW fell, 68-64. After tallying 36 fouls in the game, the Warriors trailed by as many as 15 in the fourth quarter.

The Vikings took advantage of the tight officiating to start the game with 10 of their 14 first-quarter points coming from the line. South Winn, on the other hand, had to rely on its shooting abilities to keep the game in check and trailed, 14-7.

The Lady Warriors regrouped in the second stanza with Megan Elsbernd nailing a pair of free tosses to open the next eight minutes. Payton Poshusta spearheaded the surge with a pair of treys and two free throws. Kennidee DeVilbiss found her way onto the scoreboard with 3:29 remaining with a shot from beyond the arch; an open Brittany Shindelar in the lane then pulled SW to within two, 20-18, with 2:51 remaining. At the break, the Lady Warriors still had an opportunity to take down the conference leaders at 26-24.

Returning from halftime, Micole Lansing had the chance to knot the score at 28 after nailing a trey and being fouled, but the ball rolled off the rim. Four minutes into the second half, SW had already put Ed-Co into the 1-and-1 bonus with Lansing, DeVilbiss, Becca Franzen, Abby Phillips, and P. Poshusta each with three fouls.

South Winn closed out the third quarter trailing, 48-42, with player after player adding to the foul tally.

Mustering all the strength available, the Lady Warriors dug deep and ran off a 9-0 run, eventually inching to within two, 63-61, with 46 seconds remaining. However, in the end SW fell short, 68-64.
