Two more UIC wins for Lady Warriors

Two more UIC wins for Lady Warriors

Two out of three wins usually isn’t bad, but the South Winn girls’ basketball team really wanted the win on Tuesday, Jan. 21, versus MFL/MarMac. However, SW was conquered in the final minutes, 60-56. The Lady Warriors regained their composure and claimed a pair of UIC victories later in the week over Postville and North Fayette Valley.

vs. MFL/MarMac

It was a total team effort on the road Tuesday, Jan. 21, as six different Lady Warriors scored in the first quarter to put SW on top, 12-10.

Despite a pair of Micole Lansing treys that put SW ahead, 25-20, with 3:04 remaining in the second, the Lady Warriors gave up a long ball late in the half to trail, 31-28, at halftime.

It was the Bulldogs’ turn in the third to take the lead and pull out front by five with 4:29 remaining, but a short jumper by Payton Poshusta with 2:18 left evened the playing field at 38-38. The Lady Warriors ended the third stanza in the lead, 44-41, and just needed to hang on for eight more minutes.

The Lady Warriors maintained a slim advantage throughout the fourth period, but with 1:31 remaining, a three-point shot by a Bulldog sparked the MFL/MM offense and left SW trailing, 55-53. With 41 ticks of the clock remaining, Payton Poshusta saw nothing but net on a trey to pull SW to within one at 57-56. With time running out, all the Lady Warriors could do was foul sending the Bulldogs to the line. In the end, SW fell, 60-56.

vs. Postville

Neither the Lady Warriors nor the Pirates had a huge offensive night Friday as South Winn claimed its second win over Postville, 33-26.

The Lady Warriors held the Pirates to just four second-quarter points, but only contributed six of their own to the tally.

What began as a 6-0 run for SW turned into scoring drought as neither team scored for four minutes late in the third.

South Winn held on to an easy lead in the fourth for the 33-26 victory

vs. North Fayette Valley

Third time was a charm for the Warriors and TigerHawks to meet on the hardwood after Mother Nature was the winner the last two times the game was scheduled to play; this time it was South Winn who came out on top, 56-45.

Running out to a 7-2 start, the Lady Warriors let up midway through the first quarter and allowed NFV to claw its way back to 7-5. Key shots by Becca Franzen and Megan Elsbernd took SW out front with a comfortable 15-8 advantage.

The second stanza was an even mix of scoring on the part of both teams with Brittany Shindelar rattling off South Winn’s final six points of the half to give the Warriors a 32-21 halftime lead.

In the second half, the Lady Warriors set up a tough full-court press that continued to cause NFV turnovers, which in turn allowed SW several easy layups. With 1:10 remaining the TigerHawks had moved to within striking distance at 52-41, but Payton Poshusta connected on back-to-back bonus shots to push South Winn to the 56-45 victory.
