“Just like every year, the Sectional Tournament is unpredictable, and anything can happen. Our guys know that the start of the postseason puts everyone at 0-0. If you win, you keep moving on; if you lose, you make things more difficult for yourself,” said SW coach Jake Elsbernd.

With a small roster, South Winn can boast that it managed to advance five matmen on to District competition at Aplington-Parkersburg on Saturday, Feb. 15.

Ryan Hageman (170) and Chris Brincks (195) claimed Sectional titles to push the Warriors into fourth place in the team standings, while Cody Fisher (106), Luke Massman (113), and Luis Uribe (132) all earned a spot at Districts with runner-up finishes.

Hageman continues on his path to the State Meet ranked seventh in Class 1A after receiving a first-round bye and a medical forfeit in the semifinal match. It came down to a 7-2 decision over Sumner-Fredericksburg’s Trevor Pagel.

Brincks, who is currently ranked fourth, needed just seven seconds to throw Scott Kime of Turkey Valley to earn his 100th career victory and advance to the semifinal versus Saint Ansgar’s Darrick Heimer. The Warrior senior laid Heimer on his back in 32 seconds and handily won the final with a 13-3 major decision over Nashua-Plainfield’s Tyler Larson.

Fisher, Massman, and Uribe all won matches in the semifinal round, which enabled them to wrestle in the finals and advance.

“We emphasized winning one match at a time and not overlooking anyone, and that is exactly what they did,” praised Elsbernd. “I am very proud of our five qualifiers and for the rest of the team, as well. We saw a lot of improvement, and I think that gets kids excited for our program and the future.”

After being snowed out several times, South Winn finally managed to host its only triangular of the 2013-14 season on Monday, Feb. 3, to honor its senior wrestler, Chris Brincks, and its two senior cheerleaders.

The Warriors claimed easy victories over UIC competitors Central Elkader, 54-11, and Ed-Co, 45-27. They were narrowly defeated, 42-41, by MFL/MarMac, partially due to a pair of forfeits. Each of South Winn’s victories versus the Bulldogs came by throws.
