With the season winding down, the Warrior basketball team had nothing short of a busy week with four games in five days, making for some tired legs by the end of the week as South Winn defeated Starmont in both outings and West Central, but falling to North Fayette Valley.

vs. Starmont

Since Mother Nature had intervened on several occasions this season, the Warriors finally had a chance Monday, Feb. 3, to square off on the hardwood.

South Winn dominated both offensively and defensively in the 68-37 victory with a trio of Warriors collecting double digits. Trevor Schweinefus, Garrett Bohach, and Logan Schweinefus collected 21, 11, and 10 points, respectively, to lead South Winn to the win.

Adam Lensing managed to position himself expertly under the rim for 11 caroms to top the rebounding chart.

vs. West Central

After dominating West Central earlier in the season, the Warriors had their hands full of the big man, Ethan Steinbronn, under the basket on Tuesday, Feb. 4.

Trailing throughout most the game, South Winn needed a miracle to pull off the victory, but it came. Down by five points with 41 seconds left, the Warriors managed a pair of steals and a rebound off a missed free throw to give them the win.

Trevor Schweinefus first connected on one of two charity tosses with 34 ticks on the clock, then on the WC in-bounds play snatched the basketball from the air and laid it up and in to make it a two-point game, 63-61.

Forced to foul, South Winn put a Blue Devil at the line and, as luck would have it, both free tosses were missed, allowing the Warriors to set up a game plan with 18 seconds remaining.

It was Jared Schroeder who threw up a quick shot with eight seconds remaining to knot the score, 63-63. Looking to move the ball quickly down the court, WC threw the ball to midcourt, but the pass was intercepted by Garrett Bohach, who found T. Schweinefus driving down the lane for a layup and the 65-63 win with one tick remaining.

On a final-ditch effort, the Blue Devils sailed the ball the length of the court, but Adam Lensing was there to bat the ball out of the WC player’s hands as the buzzer rang out.

vs. North Fayette Valley

The Warriors were dealt a blow Thursday on the road at NFV, 76-71, in a game that came down to the final minutes.

South Winn looked to be in control of the game at halftime with a 46-39 lead, but it vanished quickly in the third as the TigerHawks outscored the Warriors, 22-14.

With 10 ticks of the clock remaining, South Winn was down by three, but this time was unable to overcome the deficit.

The true downfall for South Winn came from behind the arc as NFV drained 10 of 18 attempts.

T. Schweinefus drained 28 points for the Warrior effort with Jordan Rommes nailing 17 points.

Off the rim, it was Andre Walz collecting seven boards and three blocked shots.

vs. Starmont

Sitting back in a zone defense on Friday, the Warriors faced a much different Starmont team than they had four days prior. The Stars pounded up and down the court at in a fast pace, springing to a 17-14 first-quarter lead.

It took everything the Warriors had to overcome Starmont in the fourth quarter. South Winn didn’t knot the score at 49 until Andre Walz hit a short jumper with 5:00 remaining. From there the game belonged to the Warriors as they never looked back and claimed the 65-56 win.
