The West Central boys’ foray into Class 1A District 5 basketball action was a short one as Don Bosco edged the Devils, 45-42, Saturday, Feb. 22, in Dunkerton.

The game was originally set for Thursday, but the rain, snow, and high winds caused a postponement.

When the two teams finally faced each other, the game turned out to be a thriller.

The Dons opened with a 10-7 lead at the end of the first quarter, but WC rallied to take a slim 24-23 lead into the locker room at halftime.

A nice third quarter left the Blue Devils with a 40-32 lead. Then the roof caved in. DB put on the defensive pressure and West Central started to turn the ball over as the offense went cold, giving the Dons a 13-2 advantage over the final eight minutes.

Ethan Steinbronn led all scorers with 23 points; he also led the Devils with nine rebounds and five blocks.

James Niemann and Joe Wolfe added six points apiece, while Hud Johnston made the only 3-pointer for West Central; he also had seven rebounds.

West Central ends the year at 11-11 and 6-5 in the UIC. The Devils lose Chase Grimm, Devin Lamphere and Johnston. However, they will have three seniors next season, a pair of juniors, and a freshman with varsity experience.  Couple that with the up-and-coming JV squad from this year, and the future looks potentially bright for the West Central boys’ team.
