After a one-day postponement, the South Winn boys’ basketball team felt ready for the scrub matchup versus North Fayette Valley for the right to continue in the postseason, but it was a slow start for the Warriors on Tuesday, Feb. 18.

The Warriors would hold their only lead of the game, 5-4, just four minutes into the game when Adam Lensing drove to basket and connected for an old-fashioned three-point play. From there, the TigerHawks sprang out on a 12-0 run, and South Winn senior Garrett Bohach nailed a pair of free tosses with 17 ticks remaining in the first quarter to settle the score at 16-7 in favor of NFV.

Trevor Schweinefus and Jordan Rommes shouldered the scoring demands of the Warriors in the second quarter as South Winn went into the break trailing, 33-22. Of the Warriors’ 15 second-quarter points, Schweinefus tallied 11.

Hungry for the win, South Winn pulled together in the third quarter, which was sparked by a couple of Rommes’ steals and layups to start the half. Bohach further ignited the fire with a trey from straightaway to narrow the score, 38-30, still in favor of the TigerHawks.

As the closing minute of the third quarter neared, T. Schweinefus was fouled on a shot and nailed his free throw for SW to inch within six, 46-40. Rommes added a short jumper with 50 seconds remaining, and the 22-point third quarter was capped off by a pair of T. Schweinefus free throws to set the score at 48-44.

It was make-it-or-break-it time as the fourth period began for the two teams. Treyton Jacobsen drove in for a jumper that was missed, but in position was Rommes, who was fouled on the putback and sailed his pair of free throws through the net to pull South Winn to within two, 48-46.

NFV soon pulled back out in front, 54-46, with 5:57 remaining

However, the Warrior fans were on their feet as Andre Walz hit a trey, followed by a Rommes steal and T. Schweinefus basket. With 2:49 left on the clock, South Winn pulled to within one, 56-55.

Soon NFV went on a run and pulled away to 65-59 with 0:52 remaining. A Rommes jumper pulled South Winn to 65-61, but the Warriors would score their last point with 31 ticks left on clock as Bohach connected on just one of two free throws. South Winn fell out of the postseason and ended to the 2013-14 season, 67-62, to North Fayette Valley.

As he has done most of the season, T. Schweinefus led all other scorers with 29 points; Rommes added another 18.

Adam Lensing was the team’s top rebounder and blocker with six and four, respectively; T. Schweinefus pulled down another four caroms.

Six quality seniors said goodbye to high school basketball following the game – all having contributed immensely during the 2013-14 season.
