It was a busy week for the South Winn golf teams that survived the cold, wet, and windy conditions plaguing northeast Iowa last week.

“I’m very happy with how the teams are playing in such severe weather conditions,” said co-head coach Doug Schweinefus. “We are continuing to look to improve our scoring average as we get closer to Conference and the first round of tournament play.”

SW boys

With a 21-stroke advantage, the Warriors took the win over Sumner-Fredericksburg on Tuesday, April 29, on the soggy South Winn Golf and Country Club course near Calmar.

Trevor Schweinefus and Nathan Winter were co-runners-up with 38 strokes. Right behind the duo were Logan Schweinefus and Tanner Kuennen with 39 strokes on their cards to push the Warriors to the win, 154-175.

Other varsity golfers included Blake Kuennen and Jerod Heying, each carding 44.

South Winn carried the momentum into Thursday’s dual meet at Big Rock Country Club versus West Central, claiming victory, 154-180, in yet another day of cold, wet, and windy conditions.

Leading the way was T. Schweinefus with a 35 over younger brother L. Schweinefus who added a 36 on the varsity scorecard. Filling in the varsity spots were T. Kuennen with 38, Heying and Winter with 45 strokes, and B. Kuennen with 48.

It was another great win for the South Winn boys on Friday as they shot a total of 161 to win over Sumner-Fredericksburg (176), North Fayette Valley (176), and Ed-Co (187).

Logan Schweinefus (35) and Trevor Schweinefus (37) cleaned up the course and took medalist and runner-up honors. Nathan Winter (44) and Tanner Kuennen (45) wrapped up the varsity scorecard.

Other South Winn varsity golfers included Anthony Emanuel (48), Blake Kuennen (55), Brendan Hageman (56), and Jerod Heying (58).

SW girls

The Lady Warriors were edged out of the lead spot on Tuesday versus the Cougars, 220-202. Topping the SW card was Megan Elsbernd with 52 strokes, followed by Megan Hageman with 54. Adding in 57 strokes apiece were Megan Bushman and Jaimie Elsbernd. Other varsity golfers included Bailey Timp (62) and Caitlin Holien (64).

Megan Hageman swung a new career-low of 42 on Thursday to earn medalist honors versus West Central. The Blue Devils did not have enough girls to complete a scorecard, allowing South Winn to take the win with 196 total strokes.

With 50 strokes, Megan Elsbernd earned runner-up honors while Megan Bushman was one stroke back with 51. Skyler Luzum was the Lady Warriors’ final scorer with 53 strokes.

Also hitting the links for South Winn were Jaimie Elsbernd (53), Caitlin Holien (57), Christina Wagner (61), and Bailey Timp (64).

“I was very pleased with how Megan (Hageman) played today,” said Schweinefus. “It’s nice to see how Skyler and Jaimie continue to lower their scores each meet. Our seniors all have the game to score in the 40s.”

On Friday, the Lady Warriors narrowly edged out North Fayette Valley, 206-207, to take the victory. The Sumner-Fredericksburg team shot a total of 226 strokes, followed by host Ed-Co, 236.

Tied at 47 strokes, runner-up medalists were Megan Bushman and Megan Elsbernd. Skyler Luzum and Jaimie Elsbernd rounded out the scorecard with 56 strokes apiece.

Also shooting on Friday for South Winn were Megan Hageman (57), Bailey Timp (66), Christina Wagner (59), and Taylor Claman (84).

On Monday, the South Winn golf teams faced Turkey Valley at Jackson Heights Golf Course and then traveled to Starmont on Tuesday. Meet and individuals scores were unavailable at press time.

The two teams will now begin preparations for the postseason as the UIC Meets will be held Monday, May 12. The girls’ golf team will be competing at Big Rock Country Club in Fayette, and the boys will be at Tri-City Golf Course near Luana.
