The city of Fayette will soon have a new police chief.

The Fayette City Council met in a special session Wednesday night, Oct. 14, agreeing 3-1 to hire Richard Pisanti at an annual salary of $55,000.

Pisanti, 49, attended South Broward High School and has a degree in public administration from Barry University in Miami Shores, Fla. He earned his police officer certification from Broward Police Academy.

Pisanti is currently employed by the Broward County Sheriff’s office in Fort Lauderdale, having worked with the department since 1987.

He initially applied for the job as Fayette’s chief law enforcement officer because he is nearing Florida’s mandatory retirement age, according to the city’s mayor.

Mayor Andrew Wenthe said Pisanti was recommended for hire by the Police Chief Search Committee and a law enforcement panel that included the Fayette County Sheriff and chief deputy, in addition to the Oelwein and West Union police chiefs. Several candidates were interviewed, and the panel’s top two picks were introduced to the community in a “Meet and Greet” in September.

Pisanti’s start date is Monday, Nov. 9. He replaces Brad Gardner, who resigned in the fall of 2014.

Councilman Dan Boberg participated in the meeting via teleconference. Richard Patrick was absent. Voting “yes” were Councilmembers Kris McGrane, Patty Nefzger and Todd Sorensen.
