Donald "Buck" Myers

 

 

Donald R. “Buck” Myers age 77 of Waucoma, IA, died Tuesday, November 17, 2015, at his home.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, November 21, 2015, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Waucoma with burial in the church cemetery.

Friends greeted the family 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. Friday, November 20, 2015, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waucoma where there was a 8:00 p.m. parish scripture service.  Visitation continued an hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.

Donald Ralph “Buck” Myers was born January 15, 1938, on the family farm east of Waucoma, IA, the son of Clifford and Loretta (Gebel) Myers.  

He attended St. Mary’s School, Waucoma and was a 1955 graduate of Waucoma High School.  

Following graduation he worked for two years at Myers Brothers Construction and subsequently joined the United States Army in 1957.  He was part of the 82nd Airborne for two years and after completion of his duties, was honorably discharged on December 3, 1958.  

In 1959, he began working for Carpenter and Kraft Construction of West Union. 

On April 30, 1960, Buck was united in marriage to Sandra Schlicte at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waucoma.  To this union four children were born. 

After their marriage Buck started farming and did so for many years.  He also worked at John Deere in Waterloo for three years while still farming. In 1966, Buck started hauling mail, first as a substitute and then full time, until 2006 when he retired to care for his wife.  Sandy died on December 28, 2007. 

Buck enjoyed life to the fullest.  He especially loved spending time with his family and friends.  Buck enjoyed playing softball and did so for 40 years.  Buck and Sandy helped start the Waucoma Ball Diamond.  He also raced stock cars for 10 years.

Some of his many contributions to the local community include; First Responder for 10 years, active member of the American Legion and Mayor of Waucoma for two years.  

Buck was the best grandfather ever and his grandchildren meant everything to him.  He loved going to sporting events and was their #1 fan.  He also enjoyed watching the Minnesota Vikings.  Some of his favorite pastimes included, gambling at the casino, Wednesday night bowling league, daily card playing at Riverside in Waucoma and Sunday morning cards with his crew.

Survivors include his four children, Jeff (Karen) Myers of Kirbyville, TX, Jennifer Myers (Pat Stanbrough) of Auburn, IA, Jody Myers of Waucoma and Jill (Alan) Shindelar of Calmar, IA;  Buck and Sandy also embraced as their own, Ed and Pat Wickham of Osage, IA and Mark and Chatz Ott of Denver, IA: grandchildren, Molly (Zach) Audetat, Macie Myers, Brooke Busta, Blair Busta, Samantha Shindelar, Brittany Shindelar and Carly Myers; Buck and Sandy also considered as their own grandchildren, Troy (Jess) Wickham, Tesia (Kyle) Gust, Caylee and Courtney Ott; six great grandchildren, Abel and Aja Audetat, Brinley and Brody Shimek, Aidan and Hayley Wickham; one brother, Cletus (Elaine) Myers of Waucoma; one sister, Arlene (Alfred) Schmitt of Waucoma; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sandy; his parents, Clifford and Loretta; mother-in-law, Lorraine Schlicte.        47u47
