Virginia Toenges

 

 

Virginia J. Toenges, 85, of Sumner, and formerly of Hawkeye died Wednesday, February 22, 2017, at the Hillcrest Home in Sumner.

 

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 1, 2017, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye with Rev. Jim Harbaugh officiating.  Interment will follow at Hawkeye Cemetery.  Friends may call from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 28th at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Hawkeye and for one hour preceding services at the church on Wednesday. Virginia June, daughter of Judd and Grace (Brockway) Van Brocklin was born June 7, 1931, in Bethel Township, Rural Alpha, Iowa. She was baptized at the Methodist Church in Alpha and received her education in the Alpha Schools graduating from Alpha High School in the spring of 1949. On August 8, 1950, she was united in marriage with Lawrence Toenges at the Alpha Methodist Church. In December of 1950, Virginia was confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye. Virginia and Lawrence farmed in the Hawkeye area for many years before retiring in 1995, and moving in to Hawkeye. Lawrence’s death occurred on May 6, 2003, and due to the excellent care from her family, she was able to stay in her home until moving to the Hillcrest Home in August of 2016. Virginia was a long time member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye where she was a Sunday School teacher and served on the church council. She was a member of the Hawkeye Garden Club. Virginia enjoyed raising chickens, gardening, reading, but most especially enjoyed spending time with her family.

 

Virginia is survived by her four children, Larry (Deb) Toenges of Sumner, Judy Miller of West Union, Duane (Coleen) Toenges of Houston, Texas and Kevin Toenges of Hawkeye; 7 grandchildren, Jason (Lindsey) Toenges of Marcus, Iowa, Travis (Susan) Seehase of Sumner, Tyson (Sara) Seehase of Des Moines, Eric (Ai-linh-Hong) Miller of Waterloo, Joshua Toenges of Houston, Texas, Kyle Miller and friend, Pamela of Des Moines and Lisa Miller of West Union; eleven great-grandchildren, Hayden, Kayla and Peyton, Callahan, Jaydlin, Klay and Alivia, Calli and Miah, Elise and Ethan; and one sister, Caryl Hoepfner of Milton Freewater, Oregon.

 

In addition to her parents, and husband, Lawrence she was preceded in death by two brothers, Russell and Yogi Van Brocklin.
