Lawrence Hurd was born March 11, 1930 at Oelwein, Iowa the son of Harold W. and Nodah (Cue) Hurd.  He graduated from Maynard High School in 1948 and proudly served in the National Guard for 2 years.  On September 11, 1949, he was united in marriage to Shirley Norine Lockard at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Maynard.  Lawrence and Shirley farmed in the Maynard area for 10 years and then owned and operated Hurd Welding and Repair in Westgate for 38 years.  His shop motto was “I can fix most everything except a broken heart or the crack of dawn”.  He was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Westgate where he held many offices on church council, was a past boy scout leader, past president of the Iowa Blacksmith & Welders Association, member of the Westgate Fire Department where he served as chief for 20 years and the Westgate City Council.  Lawrence sang at many special events: funerals, weddings, celebrations and church services.  He loved motorcycles, owning more than 20 in his lifetime and continuing to ride until he was 86.  Lawrence enjoyed riding with his wife, Shirley, and friend, Ray Faist.   He also enjoyed camping in the RV with Shirley and wintering down south.  Lawrence especially loved living and working in Westgate where he supported many community projects.  In his free time, he enjoyed spending time with his family and members of his community.  Lawrence was good at telling jokes and was always the life of the party.
