Wayne Ruroden

Wayne A. Ruroden, 73, of Waukon, IA, died Friday, December 27, 2019, in rural Waukon. A private family gathering will be held at a later date to celebrate Wayne’s life. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon is assisting the family with arrangements. 

     Wayne Allen Ruroden was born November 2, 1946, in West Union, IA, the son of Emory and Ula (Howard) Ruroden. He was baptized and confirmed at Bethel Presbyterian Church in West Union and attended West Union country schools and West Union High School. Wayne worked for George Schatz, traveling the horse racing circuit and living in various places throughout the United States including Boston, upstate New York, Nashville, and Louisville; he trained and groomed horses until 1985 when he returned to Clermont, IA where he worked for area farmers. In 1989, he moved to Waukon, IA, and worked for Reel Core as a machine operator, worked as a night watchman for Northern Engraving, and also worked for several area farmers.

     Wayne loved animals, particularly horses, chickens, dogs, and cats. He enjoyed spending time in the outdoors, camping with family, especially his grandchildren, teaching them how to create colorful campfires and to cook over an open fire. Other outdoor activities that Wayne found enjoyment in were cutting wood, mushroom hunting, driving tractor and fencing. Wayne looked forward to spending time with his family during the holidays and special occasions. His favorite Holiday was Christmas as he enjoyed playing Santa Claus for his nieces, nephews and grandchildren.  Wayne enjoyed attending local county fairs and watching his grandsons show cattle and other animals.  Wayne closely followed the horse racing circuit as well as many professional and college team sports.  His favorite team was the San Francisco 49ers.  He enjoyed watching old westerns, listening to country music, and following the local news, world news, and politics. 

     Survivors include his true love and soulmate: Jane Miene of Waukon; their children: Vickie Miene of Iowa City, IA, Scott (Maria) Miene of Waukon, and Karrie (Don) Zidlicky of Decorah, IA; seven grandchildren: Colin, Carter, and Cody Zidlicky, Lynn (John) Unsen, Cheena Etzel, and Isabel and Dylan Miene; five great-grandchildren: Ben Miene, Davis and Anderson Unsen, and Josh and Connor Miene; three sisters: Lorraine Pape of West Union, Karen (Kenneth) Kohls of Clermont, and Dorene (Dean) Peyton of Calmar, IA; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; a brother Duane Ruroden; a sister Elaine Voss; and his stepfather Clarion Hilgerson and four nephews.
