Leslie L. “Les” Cushion, 89, of Maynard, Iowa died Saturday afternoon, April 18, 2020 at Maple Crest Manor in Fayette, Iowa.

Due to state and federal guidance on gatherings due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the family will have a private service at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Maynard.  Private family inurnment will follow at Long Grove Cemetery in Maynard, with a flag presentation by the Lundbye-Carpenter American Legion Post #245 of Maynard.  Family and friends are invited to join the family on Wednesday, April 22, 2020 at 1:30 p.m. via Facebook Live on Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home Facebook Page.  We encourage relatives and friends to reach out to the family by leaving a message on the funeral home web site, by mail, text or phone.  

Memorials may be directed in his name to the Lundbye-Carpenter American Legion Post #245 of Maynard or the Maynard Fire Department.

Leslie Leroy Cushion was born May 11, 1930 in rural Arlington, Iowa, the son of Vier Thompson and Ollie (Northrop) Cushion.  In 1947, he graduated from Maynard High School.  After high school, Les worked for Earl Arthur for six years.  He then proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.  After his honorable discharge from the Army, he was employed at Cohn Brothers Scrap Yard in Waterloo for two years.  On August 1951, he was united in marriage to Jennie Witte.  To this union four children were born, Connie, Linda, Les and Patti.  They later divorced.  Les was the Street Superintendent for the City of Maynard for over 30 years.  On May 31, 1986, he married Clare Audrey Cummings in De Soto, Wisconsin.  After his retirement in 1992, he worked part-time for Greg Bryan Construction.  He was a 66-year member of the Lundbye-Carpenter American Legion Post #245 of Maynard and a former member of the VFW.  Les enjoyed coon hunting, going to the river, fishing and driving around town on his golf cart.

Les is survived by his 4 children: Connie (Mark) Dahlin of La Crescent, Minnesota, Linda (Jeff) Alderson of Wadena, Les (Deb) Cushion of Fayette and Patti Cushion of Maynard; 6 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; and a special friend: Joanne Whyte of Racine, Wisconsin.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife: Clare; and 2 brothers: Ivan Cushion and Howard Cushion.
