SW volleyball struggles in tournament play

It was a tough weekend for the Warrior volleyball team, which competed in tournament action at Jesup on Saturday.

“Tournaments are a great way to look at a number of personnel options and we think we found some things that will be beneficial for us,” said an optimistic coach Alex Smith after the team went 0-4 in the round robin tournament. 

The Warriors opened against North Linn, falling 21-5 and 21-11. Against Central Elkader, South Winn fell by scores of 21-9 and 21-6.

The tournament continued against Alburnett, where the Pirates came out on top of 21-11 and 21-13 scores. The final matchup of the day pitted South Winn against Jesup, with the J-Hawks winning 21-9 and 21-12.

“After a week of practice, we planned to look at some rotation options that might provide some more offense for us,” added Coach Smith. “We knew going in this would take some adjustments and unfortunately, the balance or serve receive and defense outweighed the benefits of some options we considered.”

The 0-10 Warriors will use a few days of practice to prepare for their Upper Iowa Conference opener at West Central on Thursday. The team is then scheduled to compete in a tournament at Nashua-Plainfield on Saturday.
